Pregnancy Tea - A gentle but effective uterine tonic, this combo has been used any time to help support a healthy pregnancy. It provides B vitamins, vitamin C and a number of minerals, including potassium, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus and iron. Red raspberry leaf, a component in this pregnancy tea blend, may strengthen the uterine walls and decrease labor time in pregnant woman and relieve premenstrual symptoms in women in general. For most people, it appears to be safe ...to drink 13 cups per day, though intake should be limited to 1 cup during early pregnancy. While more research needs to be done to fully understand all of red raspberry leaf tea’s positive attributes, it appears to be safe for most. If you are willing to try an herbal remedy, red raspberry leaf tea might be for you, but it’s important to consult with your doctor before consuming it. #pregnancy #redraspberryleaftea #fertility #preconception #support #wellness #tea #fertilitysupport #vitamins #nutrients #health #nutrition #teatime #nourish See more

Happy Monday Everyone!! Thought I would spread some positive energy your way. I love this quote, because the analogy is that to believe in ourselves is an ingredient for miracles. This quote makes reference to that power and reminds us that even when we feel scared, small or insecure, confidence can lead us to action and help bring the results we aim at. #mondaymotivation #mondayvibes #quotes #quoteoftheday #love #happiness #confidence #beyourself #youarefabulous #wellness #health #mindset #results #driven #passionate #bekind #unique #individuality #independent

Coming soon to NatCan in 2021 - Sage Smudging Kits! With the chaotic nature of today's modern world, the idea of cleansing our spaces and ourselves of negative energy sounds quite appealing. But what are the benefits of burning sage? Sage belongs to the Salvia plant family and is derived from the Latin word salvere, which means "to heal." Aside from the metaphysical uses of smudging, research is showing that sage can also be used to benefit physical, mental, and emotional... well-being. There are a number of studies that have shown that medicinal smokes such as sage have powerful antimicrobial and antibacterial qualities, can improve mood and cognition, can serve as an insect repellent, and can even help with sleep quality by easing insomnia. Spiritually speaking, burning sage is also thought to ward off negativity and toxicity. You can think of it like clearing the slate for more positivity to enter your space. I personally love the smell and multifaceted usages of sage - it’s another tool for your mind, body and spirit! #zen - DM me to be added to the wait list for this amazing kit which includes a shell, pre-rolled smudge sticks and a feather to fan the scent/positivity around your space. #natcanteam #sage #wellness #cleanse #positivevibes #inhaleexhale #smudge #energyhealing #nature #medicine #green #sagesmudge #clinic #waitlist #getsyourstoday See more

Given the current situation, this seemed an interesting quote to tackle. It reminds us that the tough times come and go. Even if things seem bleak today, in a few years it will likely be very different. The quote then says that tough people do last. It implies that the people who can weather the tough times are sufficiently tough to handle just about anything. Together, the two parts of the quote reminds us that while the difficulties are transient, people are durable. By d...urable I mean that tough people can persevere, that you can persevere, through anything that you might have to face. So remember...You are a tough cookie my dear and you’ve got this!! #mindset #covid_19 #toughtimesdontlast #perseverance #wellness #tough #strong #strongertogether #quoteoftheday #spreadlovenothate #bekind See more

Love is everywhere it seems. Movies, songs and poetry all focus on the ecstasy of falling in love and the bliss of being in love. Love is the most powerful thing on earth! There is a significant body of evidence suggesting that love can actually affect your health and wellbeing. It should come as no surprise by now that our bodies and minds are inexorably linked, and the positive emotions associated with passionate feelings towards another person can not only positively inf...luence you state of mind but also your physical health. So whether you are single or you’ve been married for years, make sure you make time to invite love into your life. But did you know that love can boost your immunity? Feeling loved, cared for and secure tends to boosts the immune system and reduce the chance of catching a cold or other viral infections. Those who have a loving support system also tend to recover more quickly from an illness. Love also helps your gut. After all, 80% of your immune system (and the vast majority of your body’s microbes) reside in your gut. The feeling of love can help to nurture and support your life-enhancing gut microbiome and fight off harmful bacteria that can make you feel under the weather. This time more than ever we need to spread love and support one another. And remember, you never know what someone is going through. Be kind always #love See more

Did you know that it’s important to eat according to the season? The season and time of year is another factor when it comes to food choices. For instance, spring is often wet and sticky, which means we need food that can take away the dampness in our body, such as white beans and onion. Summer is hot, so we need food to cool us down, such as watermelon and cucumber. Autumn is dry, which means we need food to "lubricate" us, such as snow peas and honey. Winter is cold, so w...e need food which warms up the body, such as soups or stews that have things like beef or shrimp. In the globalized world, one can easily buy foods that are not in season. But traditional Chinese practices dictate that this is not the best way to feed ourselves, since during these colder months it’s best to start our mornings off with something warm in temperature and cooked to fuel and nourish our immune system. Warm food is already at the operating temperature of the body and therefore does not have to be heated up by the stomach to be processed further. This is the case because a stomach which is strained by warming up the food cannot prepare the spleen ideally for its task. This then leads to digestive problems and can weaken the immune system. But if you treat your body with a warm, cooked breakfast, the stomach and spleen can work together ideally and build up Qi, which in TCM can be translated as life energy. Furthermore, the internal organ clock simply states that our organs function better or worse at different times of the day. If we follow this scheme, we can support our body in its work in a completely natural way. The stomach is most active between 7 am and 9 am in the morning. This means that food can be processed best during this time. After the stomach has made its contribution to digestion, according to TCM, it is the spleen’s turn. Its task is to convert food into energy (Qi). It works best between 9am and 11am. If you are a patient of mine, you know I’m always talking about Asian medicine and how it applies to your symptoms. Long story short, don’t forget to start your mornings off the right way!! #tcm #wellness #naturopath #immunesupport #acupuncture See more

A winter must have - Hyaluronic acid!! Naturally produced by your body - largest amounts of it are found in your skin, connective tissue and eyes - it’s main function is to retain water to keep your tissues well lubricated and moist. Just like collagen and elastin, the amount of naturally occurring hyaluronic acid in our bodies decreases as we get older. There are, however, ways to help stimulate production of HA in our bodies - hello diet!! Eating fruits and veggies with... lots of antioxidants protect the skin from inflammation in turn helps the skin retain it. When used in skin care products, like the one in my post @yeouthskincare , hyaluronic acid brings moisture to the surface of your skin and continually keeps skin moisturized throughout the day. #hydrated For more information, DM or book in for your complimentary skin assessment. Has your doctor told you, your blood test results are completely normal, but instead of feeling relief, you felt worse, knowing that something was wrong, but the doctor was unable to find any answers? Many naturopathic doctors and other functional medicine-oriented doctors question not the usefulness of conventional blood tests themselves, but the standard wide reference ranges the ranges are often so large that they have little practical value. ... Normal lab reference ranges of standard labs are designed to identify and diagnose disease states only, with the goal of fitting 95% of the people within the clinically normal reference ranges. As the population becomes sicker, the number of people who are declared clinically normal gets larger, making the definition of abnormal or disease states relative. The question is: Is good enough for you to be compared to the rest of the sick population and be judged as normal’ by conventional medicine, or do you have more lofty goals, like: sleeping well; being: headache-free, at a healthy weight and body composition; having: energy to live your life, bowel regularity, a short term memory, a libido, stable blood sugar; not craving sugar or being constantly moody and actually feeling joy? Most women experience some symptoms in the days before their period starts. Most commonly these include tender breasts, changes in bowel habits and menstrual cramps, and you may be a little moody. Usually these symptoms are mild and can be eased with dietary modification or perhaps a warm pack. However, if they are severe or are affecting your usual activities, you may have Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). PMS can affect your body, your mood, and your behavior.... So how can you manage PMS? 1st step is to understand the root cause - aka, why you are experiencing PMS in the first place. Is it a hormonal imbalance, if so, what hormone (in most cases, estrogen dominance)? Are there lifestyle modifications that can take place? Are there mineral or vitamin deficiencies that can ease your symptoms? Leading a healthy lifestyle can make a big difference but it’s important to understand the foundation and build upon that! If you haven’t been able to manage your premenstrual syndrome with lifestyle changes and the symptoms of PMS are affecting your health and daily activities, book a discovery call with me today to find out how I and naturopathic medicine can help you feel better #pms #vaughan #menstrualcycle #menstrualhealth #wellness #pmsproblems #womenshealth #medicine #holistic #naturopath #toronto #pink #premenstrualsyndrome #breasthealth #fertility #pregnancy #educateyourself #beinformed #nature #prevention #rootcause #askquestions See more

2020 has brought us another "gift": MASKNE! With so many people wearing masks these days to try to fight the spread of COVID-19, a lot of people are starting to experience acne and rosacea flare-ups around the mouth, nose and chin. When you breathe or talk while wearing a mask, it tends to trap in a lot of hot air. This air, along with the constant friction of the mask rubbing against your face, creates a warm, humid environment and an ideal setting for yeast, bacteria ...and other flora, such as demodex (types of skin mites that naturally live on our skin), to grow. Thankfully, we have OxyPod Balance! With its Activated Bamboo Charcoal and other powerful ingredients, the OxyPod Balance treatment is just what you need to balance and mattify oily skin, purify clogged pores, and clear toxins and bacteria from your face after you take off that mask! Natural skincare therapies like the one mentioned above are covered through naturopathic medical benefits provided we have completed an initial intake. Book your appointment today to learn more! Have you heard of castor oil? Castor oil is extracted from castor seeds (Ricinus Communis). It is a very pale yellow liquid that has a thick, sticky feel. Castor oil is an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant oil which has been used for centuries for its therapeutic and medicinal benefits. It is believed that most of castor oil's healing abilities are derived from its high concentration of unsaturated fatty acids especially ricinoleic acid. Although it has a strong and rather u...npleasant taste, castor oil is used in cosmetics, soaps, textiles, medicines, massage oils and many other everyday products. I use castor oil in a variety of contexts, from the sacred health-promoting ritual of the castor oil pack, to the treatment of skin conditions, beauty care, digestion, menstrual disorders, joint and muscle pain, topical nutrition the list goes on and on. Undeniably, it is one of the most important agents in my medicine cabinet and in my patients’ cabinets as well. The easiest way to use castor oil is to massage it onto the body on the problem spot. For superficial problems, direct topical application without the use of a heating pad is typically sufficient. Castor oil is normally safe if used in moderation. However, pregnant and lactating women and people with intestinal blockage, acute inflammatory intestinal disease, appendicitis, or abdominal pain should not take Castor Oil without their doctor's approval. Note that precautions must be taken when taking the oil internally, so you should always follow the directions on the package and consult your doctor or naturopathic professional before consuming it. Internal ingestion of Castor Oil may result in diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or cramping. Your Sunscreen May Be Doing You More Harm than Good Each year over one million people in North America are diagnosed with skin cancer! Although being in the sun can be great for vitamin D production, too much sun can be problematic over time. Soaking up the sun exposes the skin to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, some of which is naturally reflected by the skin, but the rest is absorbed by living cells. The absorbed UV damages cells causing sunburn, premature aging and skin ca...ncer. Most people slather on sunscreen or sunblock with good intentions to help protect the skin from the sun’s harmful rays. The problem is, not all sun protection products are created equally. There are a lot more things to consider besides sun protection factor (SPF) when choosing a sunscreen. Does it protect from both UVA & UVB radiation? Is it actually chemically stable in sunlight? Do the ingredients have any known or suspected health hazards? The Environmental Working Group (EWG) in Washington, DC, recognized the need for scientific analysis of sun protection products. They analysed 1,085 products on the market with information compiled from studies, toxicity information and product formulations to rank them for safety and effectiveness. Only 15% of 1,085 products analyzed met criteria for safety and effectiveness! Some of the worst offenders are Coppertone, Banana Boat and Neutrogena. What they found: 1. Products lacked UVA protection: 7% of products did not contain ingredients that would help shield the body from UVA. Long term exposure to this type of long wave radiation is linked with skin cancer. 2. They couldn’t stand up to the sun: 44% of products contained ingredients that may be unstable in the sun, making it questionable as to whether they will actually last as long as they claim to. 3. Ingredients may be linked with skin cancer: Most commercial sunscreens contain oxybenzone. It absorbs UVA & UVB rays, but the problem is that now it is actually thought to cause some forms of skin cancer! To find out how your sunscreen ranks, check out the EWG’s list of best sunscreens or contact our @natcanteam clinic to book an appointment with me to discuss your options. See more

Talking about period pain isn’t easy especially when most women believe that it’s a normal part of the experience. I remember when I first learned about periods, I was told that experiencing menstrual cramps were to be expected. Luckily, there are things that provide period pain relief! What is period pain? Dysmenorrhea is a fancy word for painful periods. In fact, painful periods are the most common gynecological symptom affecting almost 45-95% of women! While many women... think that pain is a normal part of their menstrual cycle, it can have negative effects on their daily activities (forcing them to stay home from school and/or work). When you’re on your period, the lining releases prostaglandins which causes the uterine muscles to contract. Too many prostaglandins will ultimately cause period pain like menstrual cramps and feelings of pressure. Types of dysmenorrhea: Primary Dysmenorrhea - Primary dysmenorrhea is pain without a pathology (ie. a structural cause), and can be due to prostaglandin production, nutritional deficiencies, and diet and lifestyle factors. This usually happens after a woman first experiences her period that has ovulatory cycles. It may be present right at the beginning of her period and will improve over time. Secondary Dysmenorrhea - Secondary dysmenorrhea is pain due to an underlying condition which increases during menses. Causes can include: endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids and cysts, infection, and even IUDs. This usually occurs in a woman’s 20s to 40s, and worsens over time. Not to mention, she might be experiencing her pain before, during, and after her period. Like always, I would recommend working with a Naturopathic Doctor, so they can help you figure out why your period pain is happening and the most appropriate treatments for you. I have many patients that suffer from PCOS and it’s life changing symptoms. For those of you who are unaware, PCOS is a condition formed by high androgen (testosterone) levels and insulin resistance (blood sugar irregularities), the presentation varies from person to person. The most common symptoms include: irregular menstrual cycle, difficulty conceiving, oily or acne prone skin, low/deep voice, excess hair growth, weight gain, and increased risk of depression. In most ...cases symptoms can be managed through dietary modification, supplementation, herbs or vitamins, acupuncture and lifestyle changes. Diet plays an important role in PCOS. Sufferers are more likely to gain weight due to higher insulin levels and abnormal cravings for fatty and carb rich foods. Getting a diagnosis can be difficult and the only way to do this is through ultrasound AND a blood test. 1 in 5 women suffer from PCOS and less than a third of these will talk about it. Do you have the symptoms? It won’t always be a strong and bright light and sadness will come every now and then, so just remember what you are fighting for, the night will end, the sun will rise, and you will survive. #mindset #stayhome #covid19 #wellness #medicine #naturopath #doctor #toronto #hope #light #mindfulness #quoteoftheday #vaughan #richmondhill #kingcity #bolton #woodbridge #strong #inthistogether #natcanteam See more
