How do you find you are staying hydrated with a mask on all day? I am having more patients come in with headaches and constipation caused by dehydration. I’m finding a cup with a reusable straw at my desk I can easily slip under my mask is doing the trick! #masklife #covid19 #wearyourmask #hydration #hamont #naturopathicdoctor

Do you have a little one that is heading back to school in September? Even kiddos can sense the stress going on in their environment, and may feel some extra pressure with social distancing rules. I love this post about how to make a school kit that could help your child relax in times of panic or stress put together by social worker Nicole Carter (@raising.alfie )! Does smoking marijuana affect female fertility? Asking for a friend. Marijuana is the most common recreational drug used before and during pregnancy. As it turns out, smoking weed may not PREVENT you from getting pregnant, but it could cause some major issues during your pregnancy. ... Research shows that THC (one of the main chemical compounds in marijuana) can travel through the bloodstream and cause complications with the developing fetus, increasing the risk of pregnancy loss or miscarriage. Synthetic cannabinoids often used in vapes may have a stronger effect on THC receptors, posing an even higher risk of pregnancy complications. Activation of cannabinoid receptors in the body can have negative effects on the placenta, which is the organ that provides the developing fetus with all the nutrients and oxygen it needs. This can result in problems during early stages of embryo development, increasing risk for low birth weight and pre-term birth. Marijuana use may also increase the risk of a tubal pregnancy (a potentially life threatening condition) or cause implantation failure. One study showed that among 317 pregnancies, women who were smoking marijuana were more than two times more likely to have a miscarriage then women who had stopped smoking the drug or had never smoked it. Marijuana has also been shown to increase the risk of pregnancy loss among women undergoing treatments for infertility. CBD oil has not yet been well evaluated in pregnancy. These effects can even happen in women who only smoke marijuana one or twice per week. If you are thinking about preparing your body for pregnancy, it is important to stop smoking 3 months before getting pregnant to prevent issues with implantation. It’s crazy how important Vitamin D is for our systems. It’s classically involved in bone health but also influences inflammation, cancer risk, sugar metabolism, autoimmune disorders and of course mood. A new study released in April 2020 describes the role that vitamin D levels can have in supporting fertility. Both men and women have vitamin D receptors in reproductive tissues. In men this may play an early role in sperm production. Women have vitamin D receptors in the ovary..., fallopian tube cells, walls of the uterus and in the placenta during pregnancy. It may influence both egg health and a healthy uterine lining. Vitamin D also plays an important role in estrogen and progesterone production. PCOS (poly-cystic ovarian syndrome) - During fertility treatments, Vitamin D supplementation decreased inflammatory markers, improved insulin resistance and helped increase the number of mature follicles at ovulation. Higher vitamin D levels also appear to increase the chance of ovulation and pregnancy in PCOS. ENDOMETRIOSIS - Vitamin D receptors in the uterine lining can regulate local inflammation and immune response, but it is not yet known though if Vitamin D actually makes endometriosis worse. Some human and animal studies suggest that decreasing stimulation of these receptors can improve symptoms although evidence is mixed. SPERM HEALTH - Low vitamin D levels have been correlated with decreased testosterone, low sperm motility and poor overall sperm quality, although supplemention with Vitamin D in studies does not seem to increase pregnancy rate. FEMALE VITAMIN D AND IVF - Some research suggests that women who have appropriate levels of Vitamin D get pregnant more often, and this may even holds true during IVF. Making sure to bring your vitamin D levels up to par before an IVF cycle certainly doesn’t hurt, and it may increase the chance of pregnancy, especially if you have PCOS. Get your vitamin D levels tested with an ND to know if you are deficient and determine how much you need to take! #naturopathicmedicine #infertility #fertilitysupport #IVF #vitaminD #testing #fertilitytreatment #womenshealth #hamont #905naturopath #virtualND @ Hamilton, Ontario

I’ve heard from so many women who are heartbroken their IUI or IVF fertility cycles have been put on hold due to #covid. Every month that goes by can be so frustrating without a pregnancy when you want to be doing everything you can to make it happen. So what can these patients do? Think of this time as an opportunity to prep their body and optimize egg health. Preparing your body for a pregnancy in 2020 ISN’T CANCELLED! It takes 3 months for the body to mature and release a...n egg, so this is the perfect time do a nutritional review and make sure you are getting all the nutrients needed for egg health. Healthy fat intake is the biggest area I often find patients lacking - I recommend focusing on coconut oil, avocado, olive oil and nuts and seeds. Should you be eating dairy? I think the answer to that is patient specific. :) And fish oils have also been show to help support fertility, with research even suggesting that higher fish intake could improve outcomes in IVF. So what can you do right now to increase chances of pregnancy? Work with what you can control: support nutrient levels decrease inflammation optimize sleep and melatonin manage stress levels move your body Don’t lose any more time this year sitting around waiting - I’m ready to help you figure out where to start! Well - I don’t know about you but it feels like quarantine day #207 over here. This is such a strange time, not knowing how long this will last and what life will look like when it is over. Will this virus affect any of our family members? How will it impact our local economy? Living with such impending uncertainty can be unsettling for many of us. Trying to stay present is a coping strategy to stop your mind from racing. This means focusing your attention, energy and though...ts on what is going on right now. And I don’t mean the news flooding in every waking minute about COVID stats, I mean having a tea and watching children still playing on the streets. Or chopping veggies for dinner. Or folding laundry and notice how the towels feel, or relaxing and watching a show that makes you laugh. If you are finding yourself trying to read but losing your spot, or jumping from task to task without finishing anything, or holding a conversation but really thinking of something else - your mind is likely racing. If you are feeling overwhelmed at home, try making a list of things that you can accomplish one task at a time. Experiment by doing things at a slow pace. You can even talk in your head to yourself about the actions you are doing to keep your mind focused. (ex - now I am washing my hands) One quick way to get your mind grounded is to focus on your breath. As silly as it might sound, your breath is something you always have with you and can use anytime. Try to take a deep breath in and out through your nose. Notice how your chest feels when it rises and falls. Try to take 10 of these breaths, and close your eyes if that helps you focus more. Try to monitor the messages you let into your head, especially first thing in the morning. Do you find that going on Facebook or social media makes your mind spin? Evaluate if certain triggers could be dragging you into a downward spiral, and act accordingly. Maybe a social media detox is in order? I am now offering appointments via telemedicine - reach out if you need help managing stress and anxiety during this time. COMMON SUPPLEMENT MISTAKES Is this what your morning routine looks like? I see so many patients come in taking a handful of supplements that might not be right for them or even doing anything at all! Here is a quick list of the top supplement mistakes I see people making in my practice. It is not uncommon for my recommendations to include cutting some supplements out! . .... THE WRONG DOSAGE - Fish oil is a great example of this. Many people try to take fish oil for it’s anti-inflammatory action, but to have this effect you need to be taking a high dosage of EPA (one of the two fatty acids in fish oil). I often see drug store brands of fish oil that would need a dosage of 6 caps per day to achieve a therapeutic effect. A good quality product should give you enough EPA in 1-2 caps per day. . . THE WRONG FORM - some nutrients come in different forms that cause different effects. Magnesium for example is widely available in the form of magnesium citrate. For many patients, magnesium citrate can have an inconvenient a stool loosening effect. Magnesium glycinate is a different form I recommend that many be better absorbed (so better for muscle tension) and does not have this side effect. . . THE WRONG TIME - most nutritional supplements you can take at any time of the day and it will not make a difference. But some have a stimulating effect and should be avoided closer to bed time - like B vitamins, ginseng or another herb called rhodiola. Conversely, these supplements might be useful in the afternoon to help boost energy! . . THE WRONG COMBINATION - Interactions between supplements and medications is a real concern. Natural health products can sometimes increase the levels of a medication in the body, decrease the levels or cause serious side effects. It is always best to check with your doctor, a Naturopathic Doctor or a pharmacist before starting new supplements if you are on medications. Additionally, taking iron or calcium at the same time as medications can decrease absorption in your gut. . Book an in person OR VIRTUAL appointment today to come chat about optimizing your supplement regime and get rid of any extra capsules that are not helping!!

RESEARCH FOR PATIENTS I studied for 9 years to become a Naturopathic Doctor with my Masters in Nutrition and have been treating patients since 2011, but I still look at research to figure out what the best treatment is for each patient. It is important to never stop learning, and there is more and more research published all the time on nutritional and naturopathic treatments for all kinds of conditions. Every patient is different and needs a unique treatment plan - one size ...doesn’t fit all. You won’t encounter a fancy 5 step plan that everyone goes through at my practice. Helping patients figure out their unique path to better health is what I love so much about my Monday to Friday! Can cranberry help cure a urinary tract infection? About half of all women will experience a UTI in their lifetime. For some women they can become a recurrent issue, and cranberry is one of the most popular home remedies that patients often try. The reason cranberry is used for UTIs is a compound found in the fruit called proanthocyanidins. This compound works to stop the bacteria from sticking to the bladder and urinary tract walls, preventing infection. Studies suggest tha...t an effective dosage of proanthocyanidin is 36mg twice per day for prevention of UTIs. The problem is that research suggest cranberry juice does not contain enough of this active ingredient to have any effect. Many capsules available on the market also don't have enough becuase they do not standardize for proanthocyanidin content. If you see a product that simply says 'cranberry' on the label, it may have little of the active ingredient. The use of cranberry to PREVENT a UTI has been well studied and with the right dosage of proanthocyanidin may make a difference. Treatment of a urinary tract infection that is already happening using cranberry has not been well studied. So what's a girl to do? There is more research on d-mannose, lifestyle changes, certain probiotics and herbal medicine for management of chronic UTIs. Having IBS can be a huge inconvenience. And so can figuring out how to eat so that bloating or bathroom visits don't ruin your day. Here are some simple tips to try without totally restricting everything in your diet! Try to stick with cooked veggies that will be easier for your body to break down. Yes salads are healthy - but many of my patients with IBS find that they just can't break down the raw greens. Avoid coffee and alcohol - they can irritate the gut and worse...n loose stool. Decaffeinated coffee or herbal tea is often a good alternative! It is the CAFFEINE that is a bowel stimulant. Make sure you drinking enough water - this can help relieve gas and keep bowel movements regular. Experiment with fibre - for some patients fibre can make bloating worse but for others it can help relieve constipation. Focus on soluble fibre in foods like oats, quinoa, green beans, bananas, raspberries and strawberries. Don't skip meals - eat at the same time every day to help your bowel function become more regular. Manage stress and get enough sleep - stress on the body can worsen symptoms of IBS. If you need some help narrowing down foods that night be triggering you or trying to navigate the world of nutrition with IBS - book an appointment today! Who here has reached to the point of burn out before? Or maybe that's how you are feeling right now? Recognizing the signs that you need to take a break or make a change is a serious life skill, especially before you feel like you are going to crash and burn. The problem with the stressful situations in some of our lives is that there is little we can do to change them (without permanently leaving for somewhere tropical ). Sometimes the best option to prevent burnout... is to change your body's reaction to stress, and help the body recover from stress before you reach your breaking point. So - do you need help managing stress? Ask yourself if these statements apply to any area of your life (work or home): You find yourself becoming more critical or yourself or other people You are feeling irritated about things that usually wouldn't bother you You find it hard to concentrate, your productivity is decreasing You feel exhausted all the time and may be having problems sleeping You are using alcohol, food or drugs to make yourself feel better You are noticing new digestive concerns or headaches that you can't explain The long-term consequences of burnout if it goes untreated can be low mood, anxiety, insomnia, high blood pressure, substance misuse, excessive stress, and fatigue. As a Naturopathic doctor, I focus on herbal medicine, acupuncture, nutritional support and lifestyle counselling to help the body recover from stress. DO YOU GET BRUTAL PERIOD PAINS? READ THIS! Cramps around your period happen because of INFLAMMATION. An inflammatory compound called PROSTAGLANDINS are released by the body to cause strong uterine contractions, which causes the discomfort around your time of the month. Period pain can either be considered 'primary' or 'secondary'. Primary pain is caused by this increase in prostaglandins, and can last for up to 3 days and extend to the back or sometimes thighs. This inflamm...ation can also cause headaches, nausea and loose stool. Studies show that primary cramping may be improved by regular exercise, and I have seen good results with dietary changes, stress management and acupuncture. This type of ‘primary’ cramping should also improve after taking over the counter pain medications, and not significantly affect day to day activities. Secondary cramping means cramping can be caused by another underlying issue. The most common cause of severe period pain is a condition called ENDOMETRIOSIS, affecting 10-15% of women who are childbearing age. Cramping caused by endometriosis is usually associated with extremely heavy bleeding and clotting, and pain can escalate to an unbearable level rather quickly. Other symptoms can include sharp, deep pain and cramping when urinating, having a bowel movement during their period, during intercourse, or mid cycle during ovulation. and patients may need to miss work or day to day duties for several days at a time during the period to manage pain. Endometriosis can also increase a woman's chances of infertility. FERTILITY: WHAT YOU NEED FOR HEALTHY EGGS The best time to start prepping your body for pregnancy is 3-4 months before conception. Any egg that your body releases at ovulation has been maturing in the background for around 120 days, and we want the health of both egg and sperm to be top notch. It is amazing that life is created from just a few cells, and we want the blueprints for a future embryo to be as healthy as possible. . .... FOLIC ACID - Best to start taking this 3 months before conception to help levels build up in the tissues. Folic acid is important in the early weeks of a developing baby which is why it is taking during pregnancy, but it can also help improve egg quality before conception. The best form to look for for optimal absorption from your prenatal is called 5-MTHF. . . VITAMIN D - many women are deficient in vitamin D, and studies suggest that adequate levels support better quality embryos and increase chances of a healthy pregnancy. Get your levels tested to see how much you need to be taking! . . HEALTHY FATS - a high intake of polyunsaturated fats has been shown to improve pregnancy rates. Try and increase intake of avocados, nuts, seeds, fish and olive oil! . . PRENATAL NUTRIENTS - any standard prenatal should contain a mix of B12, iron, zinc, selenium and vitamins A, C and E. Studies show better egg health and pregnancy outcomes when patients take a full prenatal instead of just folic acid. . . Visit an ND to chat about optimizing your egg health and chances of pregnancy! EXHAUSTED? LETS GET TO THE BOTTOM OF IT VITAMIN LEVELS : Deficiency in several nutrients including Vitamin B12, iron or even vitamin D can cause low energy. THYROID FUNCTION - A sluggish thyroid can wreak havoc in the body, causing weight gain, constipation, hair loss, dry skin and low energy. Naturopathic doctors look critically at lab results to make sure levels are in an optimal range for you - supportive therapies like herbal medicine and clinical can support thyro...id function if needed. HORMONES - Estrogen and progesterone levels can have an influence on energy at different times of the cycle. High levels of estrogen could hamper the function of thyroid hormones causing fatigue. High progesterone can make you sleepy but low progesterone can cause insomnia in the second half of the cycle. STRESS - High stress levels for extended periods of time can leave the body exhausted after weeks, months or years in 'fight or flight'. The body also tends to 'crash' after going through a stressful period of holding it all together. DEPRESSION can cause symptoms of fatigue, either due simply to low mood or through sleep disturbance. Changes in appetite, loss of interest in work or hobbies, social withdrawal, irritability, troubles concentrating and other symptoms may accompany the low energy in this case. ANXIETY - a mind in overdrive can leave some people tired all day, or extreme ups and downs of emotions and energy drained after panic attacks, or tired on a daily basis when the mind is in overdrive. INSOMNIA - this one is pretty self explanatory. Getting enough quality sleep can be very important for energy levels. Sometimes hormones or stress can disturb sleep, or sleep hygiene and keeping a regular routine can help others. Naturopathic treatment is never one size fits all, and I work with patients to figure out what might be affecting them individually. I didn't even mention nutrition - we will save that for another post! #lowenergy #exhaustedmom #tiredallthetime #lowiron #stress #hormones #sleep #healthdetective #naturopathicdoctor #naturopath #nutritionaltherapy #herbalmedicine #acupuncture #hamilton #hamont #hamiltonND

PREP YOUR BODY Low iron levels are really common among women who are trying to conceive in my practice. Iron can be measured through a simple blood test, and levels can be affected by what you eat, how heavy your period is or even inflammation in the gut affecting iron absorption from foods. Supporting iron levels is one way I help patients prepare their bodies for the huge task of growing a tiny human. Iron is a super important part of our red blood cells and helps to carry... oxygen to our tissues. During pregnancy the body makes 20% more red blood cells than normal to help supply nutrition and oxygen to your developing baby. If we don’t have enough iron to make them properly this can affect red blood cell production. Demands for iron during pregnancy are double what your body usually needs on a daily basis, so having healthy iron levels before pregnancy can give you a head start. Some women can support iron levels through their nutrition, while others seem to need supplements. I always look for a well absorbed form of iron when it comes to prenatal vitamins Iron Bisglycinate is the best form to look for! #ttc #naturopathicdoctor #lowiron #pregnancyprep #prepareyourbody #healthypregnancy #healthymom #naturopath #infertility #iui #ttcjourney #hamilton #hamiltonND
