Happy Women’s Entrepreneurship Day! Enthusiasm is common. Endurance is rare. ~ Angela Duckworth This quote is from Grit by @angelalduckworth. This quote is especially true in the current situation we are living in today. ... Entrepreneurship is a difficult road. You have to be great at what you do. You have to be honest. You have to be confident. You have to be patient. You have to be persistent. You have to have grit. This list can go on and on. But what I found most important is, you have to love your job. I first started learning this when I began my own swim teaching business and I continue to keep learning throughout my professional career. The days can be long and tiring. You can have days when you are really busy and days when you don’t see that many appointments on your calendar. You have to start somewhere. The road may be long, but it is rewarding. I spent eight years building a swim teaching business. I started out with no students. By the end - I had to start turning people away because my schedule was filled. I was working six days a week, over 50 hours per week. And I loved every minute of it. The relationships I made with my students and their parents I still cherish to this day. I am a couple years into my professional career and have experienced ups and downs. But I wouldn’t change anything. I love what I do. I love helping people get out of pain. I love hearing their stories and helping them achieve their goals #womensentrepreneurshipday #entrepreneur #womenentrepreneurs #business #womenshealth #chiropractic #chiropractor #guelphchiropractor #guelph #guelphontario #guelphdowntown #wellness #fitness #kitchener #waterloo #ontario

It’s World Ballet Day! You have to love dancing to stick to it. It gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store away, no paintings to show on walls and maybe hang in museums, no poems to be printed and sold, nothing but that single fleeting moment when you feel alive. ~ Merce Cunningham I miss being on stage but I am so thankful to be able to have a career where I can help dancers achieve their goals ... #ballet #worldballetday #dance #dancer #dancestudio #danceinjuryprevention #health #wellness #healthylifestyle #fitness #athlete #guelph #guelphontario #guelphdowntown #guelphchiropractor #chiropractor #chiropractic #dancechiropractor #acupuncture #activereleasetechnique #pediatricchiropractor

Part 2: The Muscles When most people think about turnout muscles they think about the large gluteal muscles. These muscles will act as hip extensors (going into an arabesque) and external rotators (turning out). However, the most important muscles for turnout are the six deep lateral rotators. These muscles are smaller and lie under the Gluteus Maximus. In addition to these muscles, there are other muscles around the hip that will contribute to external rotation. The Sartor...ius can contribute to external rotation particularly when the hip is flexed or abducted such as in passé or front attitude. The muscles on the inner thigh, the Adductors, can contribute to external rotation when the femur is in extension in addition to the primary lateral rotators. An example in dance when we use our adductors is when rising from the bottom of a plie. The six deep rotators function is to laterally rotate or turn out the leg. It can often be difficult for dancers to isolate the contraction of these muscles. It is important to know that clenching or squeezing your gluteal muscles will not activate these muscles. In fact, doing this will hinder your ability to use them while dancing. Turnout is not passive flexibility, it is about strength. However, just strengthening and working on the turnout muscles does not give you great turnout. Many other factors are involved. Stay tuned for the final part of this series where we talk about factors affecting turnout! #guelph #guelphontario #turnout #dance #dancer #muscles #muscle #dancechiropractor #chiropractor #chiropractic #guelphdance #dancestudio #anatomy #injuryprevention #danceinjuryprevention #health #wellness #children #danceanatomy

Let’s talk about Turnout! We are approaching the start of a new dance season. Even though many things will look different this season, it is still exciting to get back into the studio. Turnout is used a lot in dance; therefore, it is important to understand the anatomy and factors that affect turnout. ... I have broken down turnout into three parts: 1 Bones 2 Muscles 3 Factors affecting Turnout Part 1: The Bones In order to fully understand turnout we have to learn about the anatomy of the pelvis and hip. The pelvis is made up of two innominate bones each consisting of three bones: Ilium, Pubis, and Ischium. All three of these bones contribute to the Hip Socket or Acetabulum. Variations occur in the shape, size, and depth of the Acetabulum and this can influence how the femur moves within the Acetabulum. The pubic bones will join at the front at the symphysis pubis. The sacrum is located between the innominate bones. The pelvis is held to the sacrum with dense ligaments known as the Sacroiliac Joints. The hip joint consists of two bones, the ball and socket. The ball is the round head of the Femur and the socket is the Acetabulum. The capsule and ligaments will surround the hip joint to help stabilize the joint. Stay tuned for Part Two!

Can a chiropractor treat more than neck and back pain? Yes! I have been getting asked this question a lot from patients. Many patients do get treated for neck and back pain but those are not the only areas I am able to treat. ... I am able to assess, diagnose, and treat many areas of the body. In addition to the evidence that supports chiropractic care in managing musculoskeletal complaints of the spine, there is also evidence that supports chiropractic management of the extremities, headaches, and TMJ pain. Treatment can include adjustments, mobilizations, electro-acupuncture, active release technique (ART)/soft tissue therapy, and rehabilitative exercises. If you have any questions about how chiropractic care can help comment below or DM me. #guelph #guelphontario #ontario #chiropractor #chiropractic #guelphchiropractor #dancechiropractor #dance #dancer #rehab #rehabexercises #therapy #acupuncture #activereleasetechnique #health #wellness #womenshealth #backpain #neckpain

This post is not chiropractic related but it is something that is very important to me especially as we are in summer season. As a former Red Cross swim instructor it breaks my heart to see any child drown. While the blame here is put onto the Puddle Jumper that was not the only problem in this situation. ... Parents and guardians please watch your children when you are around water. Children get excited when they see water and want to jump in whether or not someone is watching. Your eyes have to be on them at all times. As a swim instructor we have to do the same thing. We cannot, and would not, leave your child out of our sight. I do agree that Puddle Jumpers can provide a false sense of security for the child. When teaching children how to swim the most I would use was a pool noodle so they could still use their body and feel the water around them. It also makes the transition easier for when they start to swim by themselves. The more you can help to guide them with as little equipment as possible the more confident the child will feel in the water. If you are uncomfortable with teaching them how to swim then seek out a swim instructor near you. I personally think private instructing at the beginning is very beneficial so the child can get one on one attention as they are learning the basics of swimming. If anyone has any questions please don’t hesitate to ask me. Please be water safe and always aware. ~ Dr. Shannon Webster *In order to share the whole post with text you have to switch your Facebook back to the original version then click "Share..." and that will bring up a box to check that Includes Original Text. Working from Home . As a result of the current pandemic many people are working from home. Here are some tips for how to make your workspace safe and comfortable. . 1 Maintain Proper Posture - make sure you are sitting up tall with your pelvis at the back of your seat. You can place a rolled up towel/sweater or a small cushion behind your low back to maintain support.... 2 Adjust Your Chair - your seat should be adjusted so your knees are at the same level as your hips or slightly lower. If your seat height cannot be adjusted you can sit on a firm cushion or put a block under your feet to get the desired sitting position. 3 Adjust Your Computer Monitor - the height should be so the top of the line text is at eye level or slightly below. You can use books or anything that is solid to lift your computer up if your monitor is not adjustable. 4 Keyboard and Mouse Position - place your keyboard high enough to allow you to rest your arms with your elbows at your sides and your forearms parallel to the floor. *Laptop Tip: consider buying an external keyboard, they are cheap and easy to set up. 5 Keep Moving! - avoid sitting in one posture for an extended period of time. Try your best to get up and move every 30-50 minutes. If you are experiencing any pain or discomfort while working from home don’t wait to seek out treatment. Dancers can make movements look effortless. They can leap into the air and when they come back down you barely hear them land. They have amazing flexibility, strength, and power. This beautiful form of entertainment can also lead to injuries, most commonly overuse injuries. . Resistance training with free weights, medicine balls, resistance bands, and the dancer’s own body weight is beneficial for dancers. The benefits of resistance training are numerous including improved mu...scle strength and bone health, muscle endurance, total strength capacities, enhanced motor skill performance and coordination, and improved balance. . Much like the training approach of other sports and athletic activities, the process of injury prevention in dance includes investigations that seek to identify individual risk factors for injury, followed by targeted interventions aimed at the prevention of injuries unique to dance. . At least 50% of pregnant women will experience back pain at some point throughout their pregnancy. As you progress through pregnancy you may experience back, hip, pelvic, and/or rib pain. There are a variety of factors that can contribute to these aches and pains, including: . Weight Gain: On average a woman will gain 25-35 lbs during pregnancy. As your belly grows added stress can be put on your hips and low back. . Hormonal Changes: During third trimester, there is an inc...rease in the levels of the hormone relaxin. This hormone is responsible for loosening joints to help prepare the body for birth. This can lead to decreased joint stability throughout the body. . Treatment is safe and you can start at any point throughout pregnancy. Chiropractic care can help with pain relief, easier delivery, shorter labor times, and so much more! See more
