September 10th marks World Suicide Prevention Day, which aims to raise awareness and understanding about suicide and suicide prevention. Talking about suicide is not easy and it is necessary - whether you have experienced suicidal thoughts, lost someone to suicide, or been impacted in one way or the other by suicide. In the words of Mr. Fred Rogers, Anything that’s human is mentionable and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary. The people we trust with that important talk can help us know we are not alone. The more we talk about suicide today, tomorrow, the day after, and so on, the less people will suffer in silence and the stigma that surrounds mental illness will decrease.

Today is PTSD Awareness Day. PTSD can affect anyone. When you are exposed to a traumatic event, it is completely normal to be impacted on an emotional, physiological, and cognitive level. If you are suffering from PTSD, you are not alone. It is helpful to think of your symptoms as a problem of recovery and not occurrence. Know that help and support are available.

Proud to be one among many psychologists volunteering their time to provide free services to frontline workers who have little to no coverage for mental health services.

As I sit and think about those who lost their lives in the senseless acts of violence in Nova Scotia and the community at large that has been affected, I am filled with great sorrow for those who are grieving at this time. I extend my thoughts and prayers to all those impacted by this tragedy. Thank you to the RCMP for your service and to Constable Heidi Stevenson for your acts of heroism, which did not start nor end here, but permeated the several acts of service you prov...ided throughout your career and life. At this time, I am reminded of a short and poignant poem about grief: I sit with my grief. I mother it. I hold its small, hot hand. I don’t say, shhh. I don’t say, it is okay. I wait until it is done having feelings. Then we stand and we go wash the dishes. We crack open bedroom doors, step over the creaks, and kiss the children. We are sore from this grief, like we've returned from a run, like we are training for a marathon. I'm with you all the way, says my grief, whispering, and then we splash our face with water and stretch, one big shadow and one small. - Callista Buchen http://www.thrushpoetryjournal.com/may-2019-callista-buchen
