This post is for the women who have fears about becoming a mother. We so often talk about the joys of motherhood the I always knew I was meant to be a mother, but we rarely talk about the fears Am I going to be good enough? ... Am I going to be happy? How am I going to keep it all together? Yes, of course motherhood is a beautiful gift and an amazing miracle of the human body. And I hope that the fear and pain and unknown is worth it when you have your perfect little human in front of you. But I also think it is important to talk about the fears, the what ifs, the isolation and the guilt. Because when we pretend it is all sunshine and rainbows, those real and valid feelings make us feel isolated make us feel like bad moms before we even have a baby to hold in our arms. And I think that the best mom is an honest one, a supported one, and a mom that still seeks pleasure for themselves a mom that shares her fears, finds balance and grows with the beautiful parts, but also acknowledges the not-so beautiful ones. I am going to get raw, and I am going to get vulnerable. Because in my darkest moments of worry and fear, I wish I heard more stories like thisI think it would have made me feel less alone... INNIES and OUTIES... No, I don't mean belly buttons. It has recently been brought to my attention that there is a "trend" about innie and outie vulvas circulating online. ... Men are sharing their preferences and women are sharing their elation that thank god they have an innie. First, let’s talk about what they are REALLY talking about here. This is referring to the labia minora. The inner lips of the vulva. That naturally come in different shapes, sizes, lengths, and colours. That have NOTHING to do with sexual activity (apparently there is a false rumour that the more sexual partners a woman has, the more of an outie she will have) and EVERYTHING to do with genetics. Women's sexual health and information we receive about it is at best, centred around male-pleasure, and at its worst, incorrect and harmful. This is one of those incorrect and harmful times. While watching some of these videos, I saw a woman talking about the shame of having an outie and how it forced her to get plastic surgery that left her without sensation and long term damage. All because someone made her feel shame about how her vulva looked. It broke my heart. I wrote a blog discussing this - why it's harmful for women and what we can do about it - right now today - to make sure that no woman ever feels uncomfortable about how their vulva looks ever again. I want every woman to be confident and knowledgeable about their own body and these outdated and downright incorrect myths stop women from enjoying their bodies, celebrating their pleasure and sharing that pleasure with others. My name is Jordin, but my friends and family call me Jo I am a naturopathic doctor and business owner I am a soon to be (5 weeks!) mom ... I am most passionate about bringing PLEASURE back to women's lives I have owned and operated a women's health clinic and treated thousands of women. I noticed a pattern... Tips for making your TV watching a PLEASURE-FILLED experience and not a numbing behaviour! Who else loves a good binge watch? Here's the problem...it's too easy to turn binge watching into a numbing behaviour-an escape from dealing with the daily grind, the kids or a grumpy husband.... We throw on the TV, pick a show we don't care about, scroll through our phones, mindlessly munch away on some snacks, and pour that 3rd glass of wine without even realizing. x Hours pass and we haven't shared in any joy, we have only succeeded in numbing the bad stuff, curbing the loneliness, or avoiding thinking about that difficult decision just long enough to go to bed. But...I love TV. The right TV show or movie can put me in a great mood...when I make sure to consciously treat it as a pleasure boost for myself and NOT a numbing behaviour. Here are my tips for pleasure-filled TV watching... 1. One thing at a time. If you are sitting down to watch something, get rid of your phone. You can't experience pleasure if you are half paying attention to 2 things at once. 2. Choose a show that brings you JOY. Don't put on a show just to have some background noise. Pick one that makes you feel good. Mindfully pick what you are going to give your attention to. Are you in the mood for something light and funny? Are you looking to dive into a drama? A little nostalgia or something you loved in your teen years? 3. Share. Sharing my favourite TV shows with my friends and family always brings so much joy. Remember when we used to ALL watch shows at the same time every week and talk about them the next day...with commercials? Remember when your friends used to come over to watch the next episode that you had all been waiting for? Recreate some of that! Watch it with your partner, or hit play at the same time and call each other after. If you make an effort to mindfully enjoy what you are watching, you are actively practicing pleasure and adding some joy to your day. The workload is packing the car to go on a road trip - the invisible workload is the weeks of planning, creating lists, planning menus and delegating tasks to be completed in order to get there. We are learning more and more about the impact of invisible metal labour - the kind that keeps a household running - on mental health and even on long term chronic stress and stress-related disease. I would be willing to bet we still have a lot to learn about the impact of the invisible workload on libido.
