CHECK OUT OUR NEWSLETTER Keep our teeth for 92 Years! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- by Dr. Yollick... Recent statistics tell us that the average Canadian lifespan is increasing. Great news! Many of us will live much longer lifespan than our parent`s generation and certainly, our grandparents generation. Better food choices and knowledge of nutrition, regular exercise and stress reduction strategies, better medical care, early retirement, all give us the chance of living longer. But what about our teeth? When I started as a dentist in the early 1970’s very few of patients age 65 and over hand any teeth. They had full dentures. Most of this age group had lost their teeth to tooth decay and gum disease by their early 50’s or younger. Now as I review our dental office statistics, it is most obvious that our policy of Preventative Dentistry in the form of regular checkups, cleanings and minor maintenance, will allow my committed patients to keep their teeth much longer than the previous generations. Some statistics tell us that many of us will reach the age of 92! Let’s look at the dental challenge in keeping our teeth that long.If we consider that all the adult teeth are perfectly healthy. Then by the age of 52, our teeth have been functioning for 40 years. When we look at the teeth of an average 52 year old, we see that many people have weakened teeth from having large cavities filled. Fracture lines from accidents and improper bites. Their teeth have become shorter and weaker also from grinding and clenching. Their gums and the tooth supporting bone have receded because of heredity, and habit induced gum disease. We use our teeth every day and put tremendous forces on them when chewing and even swallowing. Thus at age 52 our teeth are not as healthy as when they started out at age 12. Is it realistic or possible to keep our teeth another 40 years to age 92? I believe it is. However, every year as we get older, it becomes even more important that we have regular dental care and preventative dentistry must be practiced by the Dental Office, and the patient. Missed checkups and dental work not completed is like playing with fire!! READ FURTHER ... http://www.yollickdentists.com/Newsletter.aspx
