Be consistent in your acts of worship. Small, daily doses are better than one huge chunk and then nothing at all. The Almighty loves those deeds that are done consistently. Remember, baby steps and build it up progressively. That way you’re more likely to have staying power.

So, Allah jalla wa 'ala says in al-Fath, 26: "When the disbelievers had raging chauvinism in their hearts - the chauvinism of ignorance - Allah sent His tranqui...lity down on to His Messenger and the believers and imposed upon them the word of taqwa." This is the famous verse of which I have translated as "raging chauvinism" for now, but what's even more amazing is what defeated it. Context: the Muslims of Madinah are all on the way to Hajj despite the dangers, ready for anything. They get stopped at al-Hudaybiyyah. The Quraysh outright refuse. They insist on a ridiculously arrogant list of conditions: want their weapons, want them to get lost, want their people back, want this, want that, want this, want that. What the Quraysh were doing enraged the Sahabah to a level we'd never seen in the Seerah. But what made it infinitely worse was the goading. The Quraysh had been thoroughly humiliated until now and this move from the Muslims was just the straw that broke the camel's back. They were embarrassed by their unit being captured, by their weakness, but they knew that they had one final chance to score petty political points and cause as much temporary hassle for the Muslims, and if they were going to concede the Muslims being allowed to do Hajj the next year, then it sure wasn't going to come with smiles and kisses. So they taunted the Ansar tribe, cussing, swearing, dissing - they threw the full chauvinistic kitchen sink at the Muslims. Mixing pride and arrogance (based on their tribes and lineage and race), with real anger (being defeated and humiliated) caused a hot mess of emotions which was full of racism, bigotry and just pure chauvinism. Furious boiling chauvinism, being shouted into the face of the believers. The word comes from i.e. the root verb for that which is raging hot and feverish, and so it truly led to statements of ignorance, and hence Allah repeating the word "hamiyyah" and attaching it to "jahiliyyah". But you knew all that, and you know we got over it and came back and did Hajj and took over as well. Smashed it. But here's the question: HOW did we get over it? Like, seriously, how is anyone able to stand up to such cussing and goading? Answer: you can't. It's impossible. It's actually literally impossible. You put yourself in that situation, where there's someone screaming in your face and cussing you out, whether being racist, or cursing your parents, or claiming superiority over you for whatever xyz reason, and you're telling me that you're not even going to *shout* back, forget all the other haram stuff? Not even raise your voice?! This is in the heart of every single human, it is a latent virus that often comes out when disturbed emotionally enough or violently enough. We see that everyday from those "I don't have a racist bone in my body" fools, who when placed in some extreme situation, then display their entire skeleton of xenophobia and hate that was being suppressed all those years. My point is that you need to be special to not react at all, let alone be racist or chauvinistic back with your lineage, or passport, or colour, or status, or class etc. Okay you might be able to control not being xenophobic, but to not even *fight* back? But they did control themselves. Because Allah sent down his sakeenah. And without that tranquillity, everything would have gone to pot. Allah sent it down and calmed the hearts of the believers instead of allowing them to freak out and retaliate. The Muslims were like, "Ok we'll go back. Ok we'll stop. Ok we'll return the prisoners. Ok we'll accept your conditions. Ok. Ok. Ok." This is literally miraculous. But this is the power of sakeenah. If *we* followed this verse in our lives, and faced the hamiyyah that we experience every day with taqwa as opposed to a hamiyyah of our own - even if it is "justified" - then we would solve at least half of our own family and community problems. I can make that claim, because I judge between so many folks, and it really is amazing how petty the issues are but the egos take over right? And then the emotions rage: "I WILL DIE FIRST BEFORE I ACCEPT ANYTHING YOU ASK." Complete madness. Dictionary definition hamiyyah of the period of ignorance. Again, I'm not even saying all hamiyyah is wrong. It can even be useful at times. Even the Prophet (s) would put soldiers in their own tribal units separate from others for the benefit of the overall dynamics of the army. It is allowed to appreciate your origins and culture. It is never allowed to be racist. It is allowed to be proud of your family line. It is never allowed to let that pride make you look down on someone else. It is allowed to enjoy your class status. It is never allowed to think worse of others because of their different class status. Anyway the point I'm making is that it takes a big person with a big heart to be calm in a difficult, tense, heated situation. You need sakeenah, and divine sakeenah is the best of all. This is why this verse - which is known as one of the six verses of sakeenah in the Qur'an - might be useful to recite and reflect over when you are particularly stressed or need to be calm in a difficult situation, or you are extremely muddled over something and need a calm mind and clarity to work something out. It's not necessarily a Sunnah but it's a permissible form of healing to use the book of Allah which is the ultimate Shifaa'. Ibn al-Qayyim narrates in Madarij al-Salikeen (2/504) that Ibn Taymiyyah would recite these verses in such situations and then Ibn al-Qayyim tried the same and found it calmed him down too. They are: ----- "Their prophet said to them, ‘The sign of his authority will be that the Ark [of the Covenant] will come to you. In it there will be [the gift of] tranquillity from your Lord." (2:248) ----- "Then Allah sent His calm down to His Messenger and the believers, and He sent down invisible forces. He punished the disbelievers; this is what the disbelievers deserve." (9:26) ----- "Even if you do not help the Prophet, Allah helped him when the disbelievers drove him out: when the two of them were in the cave, he [Muhammad] said to his companion, ‘Do not worry, Allah is with us,’ and Allah sent His calm down to him, aided him with forces invisible to you, and brought down the disbelievers’ plan. Allah’s plan is higher: Allah is almighty and wise." (9:40) ----- "It was He who made His tranquillity descend into the hearts of the believers, to add faith to their faith; the forces of the heavens and earth belong to Allah; He is all knowing and all wise." (48:4) ----- "Allah was pleased with the believers when they swore allegiance to you [O Prophet] under the tree: He knew what was in their hearts and so He sent tranquillity down to them and rewarded them with a speedy triumph" (48:18) ----- "When the disbelievers had raging chauvinism in their hearts - the chauvinism of ignorance - Allah sent His tranquility down on to His Messenger and the believers and imposed upon them the word of taqwa, for that was more appropriate and fitting for them. Allah has full knowledge of all things." (48:26) ------ In a world where we ourselves are burning way too much with unacceptable emotions against those around us, perhaps we might all benefit from the same. #QuranicART #ChapterTwentySix
