ELM SCALE - A DISEASE PREVALENT IN THREE HILLS AND AREA Have you noticed trees in your yard or around town that have turned a sooty-looking black on their trunk and branches? There is a good chance you have identified European Elm Scale (EES) which is a pest that infects elm trees by attacking leaves and bark. You may not notice this disease until the infestation level is very high. Elm trees tend to have an upright shape that some describe as a champagne glass. The canopy lo...oks like an elongated and upside down triangle from a distance. HOW TO IDENTIFY ELM SCALE: - Branches are dying and black coloured. - Leaves are discoloured and drop off before fall. - Tree bark appears to be covered with black soot. - Tree branches are covered with scale backed and white fringed insects. - The honeydew material is dropping from the tree canopy. HOW TO SAVE YOUR TREE: Contact a qualified arborist to learn more about injection treatments, health assessments, and other parasite abatement treatments that can be applied to recover and protect your tree.
