Each year Paramedics across Ontario bike from Toronto to Ottawa to honour the 50 Paramedics that have lost their lives in the line of duty. Unfortunately due to Covid-19 this ride was unable to occur this year. In place of this, Paramedic Services across Ontario have been hosting the Paramedic Memorial. This Tuesday August 4th, District of Timiskaming Emergency Medical Services Paramedics will be hosting a Memorial Bike Ride to honour the 50 Paramedics lost in the line of duty across Canada. We invite members of the public to join us for opening ceremonies at 9 am outside the Temiskaming Shores City Hall or the closing ceremonies at approx 4pm outside the Kirkland Lake Ambulance Base. We will be maintaining 6ft social distancing.

Eight Timiskaming paramedics, each completing more than 30 years of service, were honoured with Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medals on Nov. 28 at the Ontario Association of Paramedic Chiefs (OAPC) annual awards gala held at Queens Park, Toronto, Ontario. This recognition is for professional paramedic service provided in a demonstrable meritorious manner, characterized by the highest standards of good conduct, industry and efficiency. The award is presented on ...behalf of the Governor General of Canada as a formal Canadian medal of recognition. 68 paramedics across Ontario received honors at this year's ceremony. This year, the following Timiskaming Paramedics were honored with their 30 year bar award: Glen Fraser, Ron Quenneville, Micheal Tinney, Gerry LaFontaine, Ken Buffam, Deputy Chief Derrick Buffam, Deputy Chief James Besley and Paramedic Chief John McCarthy. Timiskaming EMS thanks each of these paramedics for their continued and dedicated professional paramedic commitment given to the citizens of Timiskaming over the last 30 years of service.

In early October the DTSSAB Housing Services program teamed up with the Elk Lake Fire Department to stage a mock fire drill at one of our housing buildings. This was a great educational exercise for everyone involved. Preparation is the key to ensuring a safe outcome when real emergencies occur. Thank you to the Elk Lake Fire Department for their assistance in making this fire drill as realistic as possible!
October is breast cancer awareness month. Timiskaming Paramedics have changed the colour of their epaulettes worn on the shoulders of their uniforms for the month of October as a show of solidarity to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For all shifts worked during the month of October, paramedics across the district working out of all 3 stations in Haileybury, Englehart and Kirkland Lake have purchased new sets of pink epaulettes. Each participating paramedic bought a set of pink epaulettes at their own expense and the money will be donated to Breast Cancer research and awareness. A big thanks goes out to two of our own Paramedics, Sophie and Michelle for organizing this initiative!
