Nice feature in Metropolis Magazine in the Bata Shoe Factory revitalization. Envisioned and designed before COVID, the rural town setting with hi-speed internet access was completed in 2019 before remote work became reality for over 60% of workers demonstrating that social and environmental sustainability is always timely.

Our Bata Shoe Factory revitalization project has been nominated for an ArchDaily Building of the Year Award! We need your vote to show the world that design excellence and sustainability through thoughtful adaptive re-use result in highly successful buildings. This mixed use building has 47 affordable residential units, community spaces and ground floor retail. HVAC systems are fully powered by geothermal energy. The re-use of the original concrete structure retained 80% of the embodied carbon from the original building (roughly 900 cement truck loads saved!). Our Bata Shoe Factory revitalization project is featured in #canadianarchitect. This adaptive reuse project is the centrepiece of the late Sonja Bata’s vision to transform Batawa into a new model for rural sustainable development. The original factory’s concrete structure was maintained and the building features an extensive geothermal system with 63 holes at 600 feet deep. Our Garden Circle house project is featured on @archello today. This 4-bedroom home in Toronto is a response to the client’s desire for a sustainable home inspired by nature, connected to the outdoors and awash in daylight. Drawing upon biophilic design strategies we incorporated many key principles for building visual and non-visual connections with nature throughout the design. The house is imbued with wellness features, including a palette of natural materials, lush landsc...aping, and water features that offer both visual and auditory effects to enhance a sense of calmness. The front of the house incorporates a language of horizontal planes and deep overhangs, and an earthy, natural material palette of brick, wood, and stone. The planting scheme for both front and back of house integrates native plant species, selected for both summer and winter character. Green roofs front and back are visible from all bedrooms, offering multi-sensorial enjoyment to the home’s residents; the lush greenery that thrives, combined with the sweet smell of grass and other plantings, accompany the familiar sounds of buzzing bees. . . . #dubbeldam #canadianarchitecture #torontodesign #TorontoArchitect #moderndesign #architecture #sustainability #sustainabledesign #landscapedesign #landscaping #lushgardens #greenroof #customdesign #naturallight #naturalmaterials Photos by @norsworthyscott, Landscape built by @oriolelandscaping See more
