This is an interesting article. Today, on CTV Calgary, our CEO, Karla Guyn, Ph.D., discussed the economic return of wetlands and conservation. This study lends support to this notion. Have a read.

It was a super busy morning but we are never too busy to talk about wetland conservation and all the benefits and cool stuff that wetlands do! Here's our own CEO Karla Guyn appearing on CTV Calgary's Morning Live show today. https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/ Thanks,

Today is International Day of Women and Girls in Science. We want to recognize our newest wetland heroes Lucy and Sadie who are growing up to be confident and curious young scientists.

Tomorrow is International Day of Women and Girls in Science. At DUC, we celebrate the women scientists who are driving our conservation successes every single d...ay. People like Karla Guyn, biologist and DUC’s CEO. "I’m encouraged to see more women choosing to make conservation part of their lives both personally and professionally. Whenever I deliver a speech or keynote address, I’m amazed at how many women approach me afterward with questions and messages of appreciation. Many of them express a keen interest in conservation that’s been suppressed or dormant. It feels good to know that I, along with my fellow female colleagues at DUC, are giving them license to pursue and embrace the ideals of conservation and the outdoors." It's a new year and with it comes a new Manager of Provincial Operations in Alberta! Meet Thorsten Hebben. Thorsten has an impressive resume in the environmental sector. While working with the provincial government, he was instrumental in leading the development of Alberta’s wetland policy and then later was director of the Water Quality Policy Section. During his career, he's developed a strong and positive relationship with DUC. When Thorsten's not at work, he'll be puttering around his acreage or outdoors with his family. Camping, fishing, hiking, diving, skiing, snowshoeing and hunting for fossilized teeth count amongst his many pursuits. Please join all of us as we welcome Thorsten to DUC!

Just a frozen pond? Not so! Wetlands have a lot going on in the winter months, too! Taking care to conserve them and not having them disappear in the fall is equally important to the environment and ecosystems as in the spring.

Two new conservation easements established this year increased the sizeable habitat area in southern Alberta that includes DUC’s Shell Buffalo Hills Ranch, crown land, and other surrounding CEs. Collectively, this ‘island of grass in a sea of cultivation’ homes many wildlife species -- including several species at risk -- now and in the future. The two new CEs, known as the Marshall and Randle CEs, are part of Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Natural Heritage Conservation Program.

Not all ducks stay within their flyway. The species in Day 7 of our Avian Advent calendar typically follows the Atlantic and Mississippi flyways, but at least one member took a long detour.
