HERE IS TO A MORE SUSTAINABLE FUTURE One of the many unfortunate outcomes of COVID-19 has been the reversal of reusable containers for single use containers and in particular the nasty plastic types that are not even recyclable let alone compostable. ... One of our main goals for 2021 is to eradicate any single use, non-compostable plastics from our own business operations. We are in fact almost there but just a few stragglers remain. Additionally, we want to promote compostable packaging and share our knowledge that we have gained with our vendors and business partners alike. We plan to do this through education, awareness and finally incentivizing the adoption of compostable packaging. One way we will incentivize this is by offering our local partners and vendors better product display in store, online and more promotion via our social media channels. So, what are we doing here at the Market ourselves? All of our bulk food bags are now 100% compostable Our Organic Salad bags, Spinach & Arugula bags are fully compostable. Our Organic Chia bread bags are 100% compostable Our Market Box and home delivery comes in a reusable plastic totes. Our Coffee, Lattes & Espresso drinks come in 100% compostable cups and paper based, 100% compostable lids. We aim to have our all of Our Market Made Sandwiches, Salads & Chia Parfait in 100% compostable bags by the end of January. Most of our labels are now compostable. We aim to have all fully compostable in the next 1-2 months. Most of our garbage bags and recycling bags that we use for commercial waste are now compostable. Another important step we feel for promoting the use of compostable packaging is providing information on composting standards and fighting the misinformation that has flooded the market with lies we have been fed regarding recyclability. As there is not yet a widely accepted international certification for compostable packaging, we will be posting more information on local compostable certifications & home composting compatibility in the coming weeks. MARKET BOX We have some exciting news for this week’s Market Box! Not only is it filled with glorious local produce from our friends @pfenningsfarm and treasures like local, organic Rapini Greens and fresh dill from @backyardharvestfarm ! But....we are also bringing back our reusable totes!!! ... We made the ‘temporary switch to cardboard’ back in March due to health concerns with Covid 19. As we have learned since then, the virus is predominantly transmitted via airborne droplets. That said we will take every precaution we can to ensure the safety of our customers and staff including: allowing a 5 day buffer for all bins to be stored outside. Upon completion of that buffer, the bins will be thoroughly cleaned with a bleach solution (as per local health department regulations) before being brought back into circulation. We are tired of cardboard and we know you are too! We just need to ask a HUGE favor of you! When you are done with your totes, please leave them out front for us to pick them up. This is the only way to make this whole system work! We have more exciting news regarding compostable packaging coming soon. A LITTLE TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE.... Just over two years ago, our team embarked on a wonderful journey and opened Dundurn Market. It has been an amazing experience with plenty of laughter, learning, and highs and lows (mostly highs though!). Late last week they stopped by the market and dropped off gorgeous samples from their first harvest of TRULY LOCAL produce, grown in their single shipping container/modular farm just a few blocks from the market. HOW FREAKIN' COOL IS THAT???
