This week is Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week, a time dedicated to educating the public on issues of hunger and homelessness, and to draw attention to the problem of poverty. Every year, groups of volunteers celebrate the season of giving by donating their time, attention, and resources to others in need in support of this cause. In Christina Kilbourne’s SAFE HARBOUR, themes of homelessness, mental illness, family, and friendship are explored as fourteen-year-old Harbo...ur must learn how to navigate life on the streets when her father doesn’t return for her on their sailboat. To Lori, all that mattered was this moment. She was obsessed with Craig, just as Craig had been with his own idol, Mae West. Lori’s entire sense of self-worth at that time was tied to the fact that this movie star seemed to want to get to know her. Craig wants the tapestry, she thought. He wants to get to know me. As the most common cause of dementia among older adults, Alzheimer’s impacts approximately 750,000 Canadians today. For June Hutton and Tony Wanless, the signs came seven years before a diagnosis, most notably through a visual symbol of cognitive looping represented in the packing of four umbrellas into a suitcase. But how far back do these signs really go? In FOUR UMBRELLAS, follow this couple as they probe the past to find answers, emphasizing that this is not an old perso...n’s disease. The authors present a harrowing, moving seven-year odyssey, rendered in heart-wrenchingly sad yet compassionate and loving detail. Whether all these changes happened in sequence or were just all jumbled up in my mind, I'm not sure now. But I do know that the recurring pattern is excitement, boredom, desperation for something different, and eventually a leap into new and exciting. The key factor that worked its way into this sequence, however, was that each time I was an older, more worn out from all the pressure and mental ups and downs. When I was in the newsroom, we used to talk about the long, slow f...ade that seemed to be the way of the world. I believe now that I was starting it then. Happy #newrelease day to FOUR UMBRELLAS by June Hutton and Tony Wanless, which tells their story of searching for answers when Alzheimer's causes one of them to lose the place where stories come from memory. A notorious woman with whom I am well acquainted once told me, Always strike a man when he is down. Give him no reason to think that he may stand and reciprocate. As I lay on the asphalt, I considered myself lucky that no one was nearby, and luckier still that few people shared that principle. Join us in journeying to 1933 with detective Elias Roche and his robot partner, Allen, in the #newrelease of NIGHT CALL by Brenden Carlson! This debut sci-fi mystery leads us deep ...into the criminal underworld of a very different New York, where our main characters must solve a violent murder in order to prevent war between the police and the mafia. Mary Werbelow. Dream girl. I watch her from a distance. Her luminous beauty, the sparkling, intelligent eyes, porcelain skin, and sunny smile. She glows with optimism, self-confidence, independence. Her mesmerizing face, her Bardot pout, the liquid motion of her ballet body, her swanlike neck. She is radiant. I am captivated by her, but she’s older and doesn’t know I exist. A vibrant #newrelease brought to you by one of Jim Morrison's close friends during the mid-1960s, LOV...E HER MADLY by Bill Cosgrave is an entertaining memoir that reveals the story of Jim Morrison’s first love, a long-lost friendship, and the man who existed before the Doors.
