The back of the house at project Mann has a spectacular view of the well-treed backyard. So we installed floor-to-ceiling windows to open up the room and allow plenty of natural light into the space. We get to work on a lot of remodels of older homes and it's always fascinating to see what common structural themes tend to emerge. Your older home may be charming but chances are that your stairs are dark, basic and bulky. That was the case in the Harmony Hill project, the stairs desperately needed a refresh. Here's what we to transform the design of the stairs ... We ripped out the old floor and replaced it with a herringbone style charcoal tile that emulated a natural texture. We painted the pickets and handrails with a fresh white coat, and added a runner as a finishing touch. We also had to tackle a common homeowner problem: the 80s style stairs’ shelf. We simply drywalled over it, added panelling, and voila! The stairs have had a total upgrade! See more
