There have been a lot of happy moments. This is, for all of its challenges, a very rewarding profession. I can’t pinpoint the moment this happened of course but probably when I realized I had made a good career choice. 2. What job would you be terrible at? Note to self: Don’t say lawyer here! Seriously though, doctor. I don’t know how the body functions for the most part and am content with not knowing 3. If your five-year-old self suddenly found themselves inhabiting your current body, what would your five-year-old self do first? Look for some hair dye 4. Which words or phrases do you most overuse? It is what it is but, you know, it is what it is 5. What does success mean to you? Enjoying my work, doing it well, and providing good service to our clients.

Lethbridge Courthouse Opening, 16 September 1952 These photographs shows the opening of, and the interior of, the courthouse on the corner of 4 Avenue and 11 St...reet South when it opened in September 1952. The City, wanting to develop the Civic Centre area, offered to make a land deal with the province for a site of land east of the new city hall (constructed late 1940s and replaced in 2000 by the present city hall). In 1948, the province formally agreed to the land deal. But that wasn’t a promise to build and it wasn’t until the early 1950s that the province put the courthouse on 6th Street South up for sale and made plans to build a new courthouse. While the 1952 courthouse was built as a Provincial courthouse, the architects were from Lethbridge and the design and placement was done to tie in with the City of Lethbridge’s urban renewal plans and the city’s plans for Civic Centre. In fact, the same architectural team that built the courthouse was responsible for the older city hall at 4 Avenue and 9 Street South and the two buildings were designed to complement each other and the plan the city had for the area. The Lethbridge architectural firm of Meech, Mitchell and Meech were hired to design the new courthouse. The three-storey brick building was essentially Modernist in design, but with some subtle Art Deco style touches and a formal façade reminiscent of the austere classicism of the Depression years. Bird Construction, one of the province’s major contracting firms, successfully tendered a bid of $399,555 for the structure. (Foundations of Justice: Alberta’s Historic Courthouses by David Mittelstadt) A grand event was held in September 1952 to open the new courthouse. Chief Justice McLaurin, lawyers from across the province, Senators, MLAs, deputy ministers and Lethbridge’s mayor and aldermen all attended the opening. Some people, though, were not completely satisfied with the building, with some considering it much too modern. The opening of the new building quickly brought about the demise of the old courthouse which was soon knocked down and replaced by the Woolworth’s store. If you walk or drive past the building, look to the top and see if you can spot the large As that adorn the building the mark of the Province of Alberta still prominent on the building. The building, though, has been used by the City of Lethbridge for the past several decades.

A minimum recipe for a good life is one increasingly motivated by love and guided by reason. What do you wish you could change about your area of practice? I wish that more people understood how much influence big insurance companies are able to exert over politicians in order to continuously erode the rights of Albertans. What is one thing about you that surprises people? How much I love activities outdoors: fishing, hiking, camping.

We hope you enjoy getting to catch a glimpse into what makes each one of our lawyers unique. Meet Sarah Lebeau! ... If you would be reborn as an animal what kind of animal would that be and why? I would be reborn as a Peregrine Falcon, because they are masterful aviators, and I’ve always wanted to fly. They also perch atop the food chain, so I would be relatively unconcerned about being eaten alive. Which is a definite plus. When was the happiest moment of your career? It’s difficult to pick just one moment, but the day that Bruce Milne and Murray Pritchard agreed to hire a green articling student from out of town still resonates, and I’m still extraordinarily grateful. What does success mean to you? Good life quality and relative balance. Freedom from scarcity and fear. What is your favorite childhood memory? I had a great childhood, so it’s hard to pick just one. Camping at Killbear Provincial Park and cliff jumping at Harold Point are particularly shiny memories. What makes you laugh the most? The antics of my beautiful, crazy kids.

It’s Fur Baby Fridayfor the last time. We have enjoyed sharing the pets of our lawyers and staff with you but unfortunately, we’ve run out of furry family to feature. A new feature will be coming shortlystay tuned! . Meet Molly, the last member of Mharie’s furry family. Molly is an 11-year-old Border Collie x Bernese Mountain Dog. She loves the people she feels safe around with all of her heart and will often do funny tricks to please them. She has a habit of smiling at people which looks more like an angry growl with her nose all scrunched up but if you get the chance to see her smile you will fall in love with it. Molly has number of nicknames, all of which she will answer to. They include Milly, MooMoo, MeMe, and Milly Mildred.

TGIFBF! . Meet Dante! Dante is a 16-year-old cat, who belongs to Mharie, one of our legal assistants. Dante is a very timid cat, but that’s not to say she doesn’t have love to give. When comfortable, she will not take no for an answer. She will meow and paw at you until you give her the attention she demands. She also has a habit of giving little love bites when she doesn’t feel she is getting enough attention.

Friday already? Well thank goodness it’s Fur Baby Friday! . Buffy is an 8-year-old Cavapoo (cavalier spaniel x poodle) who belongs to Rylan, one of our partners, and his wife, Keri. Buffy is very active and loves to go for walks, but she is a fair-weather dog only and hates the rain. She enjoys a good bone but equally enjoys trading bones with her sister Sadie. Buffy also likes to be comfortable, particularly when she sleeps, and will ensure she sleeps on a pillow, but only if it happens to be yours!

Here’s Atticus! . Atticus is a six-year-old border collie named after Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus belongs to Mharie, one of our legal assistants. If you’ve been keeping track Mharie is our resident pet expert with a family filled with furry friends (7 to be exact)! Atticus loves to play and hangs out where she can receive as much attention as possible.

TGIFBF, meet Garrus! . Garrus is a 6-month-old Golden Retreiver puppy. He is the granddogger of Bruce Milne, who joined us in January from Milne Pritchard Law Office. Although Garrus is only temporarily staying with Bruce, he has become a very welcome visitor at our offices. He is a very handsome boy and if you’re not careful you may experience heart melting if you get too close!

Meet Maggie, this week’s Fur Baby Friday feature! . Maggie is a 14-year-old Shih Tzu who belongs to Herb, one of our partners. Maggie completes the Beswick family pet trio comprised of Maggie, Gunner, and Boots the Cat. Maggie is a stylish dog whose hair is always done to perfection, often with a scrunchie or barrette for the perfect pony-tail.

ATTENTION COMMERCIAL PROPERTY & SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS! . The Government of Canada, through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), is launching the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance program (CECRA) TODAY! This program is designed to provide relief to small business owners who rent commercial property and are experiencing financial hardship, due to COVID-19. The CECRA works by reducing the amount of rent payable by the eligible small business owner bu...t also allows the eligible Property Owner to be paid 75% of the rent owing. . How does it work? . For the months of April, May, and June 2020: Eligible Small Business Tenants will be responsible for 25% of the rent owed to the Property Owner; Eligible Property Owners will forgive 25% of the rent owed by the Small Business Tenant (this amount will not be recoverable by the Property Owner); and CMHC will loan the Property Owner the remaining 50% of the rent owed by the Small Business Tenant (interest free) and will forgive the Loan on December 31, 2020 so long as the Property Owner abides by the terms and conditions of the CECRA. Any defaults will result in the loan becoming due and payable by the Property Owner. . Property Owners are not required to have a mortgage in order to qualify for this program. . Applications are open until August 31, 2020 and will apply retroactively. Once the Application is approved, it applies to April, May, and June automatically. If rent has already been paid by the Small Business Tenant, the overage must either be reimbursed to the Small Business Tenant or applied to upcoming rent payments, at the Small Business Tenant’s election. TGIFBF! . Introducing Purdy, an 8-year-old bicolor kitty who belongs to Debbie, one of our legal assistants! Purdy has been very helpful while Debbie has been working remotely and has enjoyed the extra day-time company. Purdy is the only girl of four cats but she is a Princess with a capital P. She is very vocal and likes to use her voice to demand attention and cuddles. She likes to keep things dramatic and strives to be a reality tv star.

TGIFBF! Introducing Cleo! . Cleo is a 5-year-old kitty cat who belongs to Mharie, one of our legal assistants. Cleo was rescued by Mharie’s family and has been with them ever since. Cleo turned out to be a very happy and loving cat. She has also bonded with her doggy roommates, Atticus, Molly, and Revy, and often thinks that she is one of the gang! She enjoys chasing them around the house and puts up with their less than gentle play style.

It’s the best day of the week once again! TGIFBF! . Meet Gemma! . Gemma is a 1-year-old Goldendoodle who is the grand-dogger of Barb, one of our legal assistants. At 84lbs Gemma likes to think she is a lap dog and loves snuggles and belly rubs. Gemma enjoys long hikes, but she is sure to let you know when she is tired of walking by laying down refusing to move! At her size it becomes quite the task to get her back in the vehicle.

TGIFBF! Thank Goodness It's Fur-baby Friday! . Meet Sadie! . Sadie is a 2-year-old miniature Cockapoo (Cocker Spaniel X Poodle) who belongs to Rylan, one of our partners! Though only 10lbs Sadie has a big personality. She loves to play with tiny tennis balls but only two will do - one for her mouth and one to chase. Sadie spends her days with her big sister Buffy and most recently enjoyed being a flower girl at Rylan’s wedding this past summer. When the day is done Sadie makes sure to have a midnight snack and carries a bone with her to bed.

Happy Fur-baby Friday! . Meet Gunner! . Gunner is an 7 year-old Brittany Spaniel who belongs to Herb, one of our partners. If you’ve spent time in our office you’ve likely seen Gunner around as he often accompanies Herb. He loves his job as "firm greeter" and takes it very seriously. Gunner is an intelligent dog and can always come up with a strategy to find as many treats as possible around the office. He also has a large repertoire of tricks, his favourite being shake-a-paw. At home on the acreage he rooms with Boots the Cat, and together they are responsible for varmint control.

Happy Fur-baby Friday! . Meet Wortel! . Wortel is a 6-year-old ginger tabby who belongs to Debbie, one of our legal assistants. Wortel, which is Dutch for carrot, is lovingly referred to by Debbie as her little Peter Pan. He is a very energetic cat who loves to play and makes friends with everyone he meets. Wortel takes getting treats very seriously and never hesitates to be vocal about it!

Happy Fur-baby Friday (and Good Friday)! . Meet Revelstoke a.k.a Revy! . Revy is a 2-year-old Border Collie and Blue Heeler cross who belongs to Mharie, one of our legal assistants. Revy is a talkative dog and enjoys trying to speak like a human! He will let you know what he likes and doesn’t by whining and grunting any time he’s able. ... . It’s Fur-baby Friday! . Meet Bailey and Bella! . Bailey and Bella are both tabby cats who belong to Nicki, one of our legal assistants. Bailey and Bella are an inseparable pair and are close in age at 12 and 11 years old respectively. Bailey is a cuddly cat who loves to play tag and Bella likes to play fetchwith hair ties!
