Tech Tip: CAT Engine and DynaGen Controller When it's cold, this Caterpillar Tier4 engine has a warm-up idle speed of 1000 RPM. Using it in a generator causes... some issues. We need 1800 PRM. If it's not at 1800 RPM, the alternator is not ready to accept a load. Also, the generator controller will detect the under-speed condition and shut it down. Thankfully DYNAGEN controllers have a feature you can use to warm-up and cool-down at different speeds. The second issue is preventing the end-user from applying load before the generator is ready to accept it. That we fixed by switching off the voltage regulator, so there is no alternator output until after the warm-up time has passed, and the engine is up to normal operating speeds.
