Let's talk proxy brushes or you may have heard these little gems referred to as interdental brushes as well! On the flip side, some of you may be thinking... what the heck is that thing Let us explain, this is a proxy brush! It has bristles attached to a small wire that connects to a small plastic handle. The brush is small enough to go between your teeth. Brushes come in different sizes and if the space between your teeth is too tight for the brush to fit, try a smaller proxy brush. It can help you remove bits of food and plaque between your teeth that are easy to miss with your toothbrush. Just as when you floss, you move it between teeth until you’ve cleaned between every tooth in your mouth.

You all brushed really well after those pancakes and syrup last night right? But would you know what to look for if you brushed too hard? Here's some tips to check your routine: Check your toothbrush - Medium or hard-bristled toothbrushes can cause damage. Change to a soft or extra soft-bristled toothbrush . If your bristles are splayed out in a matter of weeks, it’s a sign that you’re brushing with too much pressure. If it’s difficult to switch from your habit of using ...hard pressure, consider buying an electric toothbrush which has regulated pressure. Check your timing - If you brush more often than three times per day, try cutting back to only after meals. Brushing too often, even when you use the right pressure, can wear your enamel away and damage your gums. For a fresh mouth without brushing, try mouthwash or sugar-free gum. Inspect your gums - Do your gums look healthy and pink, or do they frequently bleed when you brush? Bleeding gums is a sign of gum disease, which can lead to lots of oral health problems. Pay attention to sensitivity - If you have suddenly developed a sensitivity to hot or cold foods, it may be a sign of over-brushing or too much pressure on your brush. When your enamel is worn away, the tooth’s sensitive nerve is more exposed and certain foods might trigger pain and discomfort. Use proper technique - Brushing with proper technique is important. Two minutes is the right length for a typical brushing session. Place your toothbrush on a 45-degree angle against your teeth. Use short strokes and a circular scrubbing motion, not a back-and-forth motion. Gently brush your gums as well. Regular dental hygiene appointments - Your dental professional will be able to see things that you may not notice. We can advise you on how to handle sensitivity issues and give you an evaluation on your brushing technique.

Lets Talk: Acid Reflux! Chronic Acid Reflux is no fun for anyone, but as long as you take the steps to nip it in the bud, it doesnt have to mean long-term damage to your dental health. As always, your dental hygienists are here to help you live a happy, healthy life, all you have to do is book an appointment. Here are 6 tips to help fight back against acid reflux: ... 1) Go to your routine checkups. Hopefully youre doing this already, but if youre suffering from heartburn or acid reflux on a regular basis, its especially important to visit your dental hygienist periodically. Dental Hygienists can see damage caused by acid reflux even in the very early stages, and work in conjunction with you to get you the right treatment before it becomes a real problem. 2) See your family doctor. Over the counter medications wont cut it. Make sure you see your doctor to find out what course of action is best for your condition. Its important to go as soon as you think theres a problem, because the longer you wait, the worse the damage will be. 3) Avoid acidic food and drink. While its already good dental health practice to cut down on acidic foods; if you suffer from chronic acid reflux, eliminating these things altogether can lessen your chances of an episode, and help you keep your teeth strong and healthy. Citrus, tomatoes, dairy products, spicy and fried foods, fatty meats, chocolate, and caffeine are a few of the major offenders you should watch out for. Cutting these foods out may not seem like fun, but your body and mouth will thank you in the end. 4) Rinse your mouth out after every episode. If you do have an acid reflux episode, rinse your mouth out thoroughly with water to remove any acid that may remain. The worst damage is done from acidic contents that stay on your teeth for long periods of time. Even better, rinse with a something such as Listerine Nightly Reset or a home remedy to help neutralize the acid in the mouth and allow for better fluoride uptake. This is also good practice if you find it difficult to cut out all acidic foods. Rinse your mouth out after that morning coffee and keep your enamel strong. 5) Brush with fluoridated toothpaste. But not right away. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste will help strengthen your enamel and prevent it from being eaten away. Dont brush right after an episode, however. It might be tempting to get that taste out of your mouth immediately, but this is when your enamel is at its weakest. Wait at least 20 minutes after any reflux and always use a soft-bristled brush for best results. 6) Antacids arent just for your stomach. TUMS can help neutralize acid in your stomach and in your mouth. Instead of chewing or swallowing, let a sugar-free antacid dissolve in your mouth to get rid of the acid that is trying to cause damage to your teeth.
