Loose parts fill our environment at Earlybird Childcare Centre. Loose parts are materials that can be moved, carried, combined, redesigned, lined up, and explored in multiple ways. Loose parts can be used alone or combined with other materials. There is no set of specific directions for materials that are considered loose parts. The child is the direction. When children interact with loose parts a sense of wonder begins that promotes the type of thinking that leads to problem... solving, decision making, collaboration, and so many other possibilities. Loose parts enhance children's ability to think imaginatively and see solutions, and they bring a sense of wonder and adventure to children's play. In these photos children are exploring a variety of circle shaped objects; washers, bracelets, shower curtain rings, key chain rings, as well as the leftover piece of cardboard from a tape role. Some of the children began staking materials on top of one other, while others carefully took each circle shaped item off of a stand while placing it onto another.
