We chose the Plymouth Barred Rock to be our farm spokeschicken because they are the perfect small farm heritage breed. They are a dual purpose breed with excellent laying ability and lay on average 200 large brown eggs a year. They are a large breed with roosters weighing in at over ten pounds and make delicious meat which we can attest to. They are a hearty breed faring well in hot and cold climates. And the selling point for us is their docile, friendly and goofy personality. Our flock originated with Hugging Roosters lines and we have been selectively breeding to the standard of perfection since we started last spring. Please message us if you are

Twin buck kids for Gladys. It's always a relief to have a smooth labour and healthy, active kids. I can't say I'm not a little disappointed by more boys but we still have the twins, Hazel and Harriet, to even out the score for the season.

This is Hazel and Harriet. They are twin sisters who were born here last year. They are joined at the hip and I don't think they've ever been farther than 10 ft apart in their entire lives. I wanted them to have their babies at the same time and they were both bred on the same day but unfortunately Hazel got pregnant the first try but Harriet didn't so their due dates are three weeks apart. March 31 for Hazel and April 21 for Harriet.

As a child growing up in a suburb i always wondered why Easter was all about chocolate eggs, chicks and bunnies in addition to the stories about Jesus that i heard at church. Now that i live on a farm it is very clear to me and we celebrate all the new lives that we have the honour of bringing into the world and caring for. From our family to yours we wish you a safe and meaningful Easter weekend in what ever manner you choose to celebrate it.

Too cute not to share on Easter weekend. Every day is an Easter egg hunt here and I mean that literally as birds are very good hiding their eggs! But it's nice to find a chocolate egg every now and again!

Since Valentine’s Day is this week I began to look into the psychology behind the colour red. Did you know that women wearing red or even standing against a similarly red background in photos are seen as more attractive and sexually desirable by men than women not wearing red or near those red backgrounds? Perhaps that is the same reason that this dahlia grabbed my attention more than any others around it? Clearly the lesson is to have that little red dress in our closet if the mood strikes. What colour are you wearing this Valentine’s Day?
