Starting Spring Routines Yesterday we added Oxytet to all of our beehives to begin preventative treatment for Foulbrood. With the spores being very contagious and the rise of fellow beekeepers, being courteous in your care helps everyone as a whole, especially the bees. This video will briefly describe how to apply and aquire this antibiotic for your beehives. All medication or antibiotics being administered to hives must be prescribed by a local Veterinarian... We also had the opportunity to check mite levels, resources and had spotted a queen or two. Really exciting start to the 2021 Beekeeping season and we hope the best for everyone this year

Finally, the first day of Spring!!! Bring on the sweet smells and growing flowers. Time for our bees to wake up. Looking forward to getting into those hives and seeing how they did.

On days that will reach above 10 degrees and be sunny with calm winds, we will think about going out and peaking in and around the hives. We will pick up or tilt the back of the hive and judge weight compared to when we were going into winter. If the hive feels light we can add some honey frames, fondant or dry sugar to help get through until nectar starts coming in. Fondant can be placed directly on top of the hive frames under the inner cover while dry sugar should be place...d on top of the inner cover around the inner cover hole. The humidity of the hive will soften the sugar and the bees will be able to take it up. You could also add a bit of water on the sugar to help it along. Pollen shouldn't be added until later unless you plan on making a lot of splits. Pollen will stimulate the queen to begin laying. if the queen lays to much to soon and a cold snap comes in, you will lose some brood that will chill from the temperatures and wasted resources and energy from your bees. Once pollen is given to a colony it must continue to be available until natural pollen is flowering. We still have a little bit to go yet before nicer weather and now is when a colony could starve to death. Keep a eye on those beautiful bees honey resources and make sure they will be able to begin again for another year. See more

Now is the time to start thinking about wintering your hives. Sugar feeding is a good idea to help bulk out winter stores. A simple test of lifting the back of your hives can tell you if you have about 80-100 lbs of honey for winter. It should be fairly hard to lift if full, if not feed with a 2:1 syrup until they stop drinking or desired weight of hive is met. Mouse guards are cheap and effective and winter wraps help to retain the heat and black colour allows hives to warm up quicker in the early mornings of winter. Oxytet will start going on in a week or so and apivar off shortly after. We will tidy up around the apiary and cut the grass one last time and say goodnight to our ladies who did so well for us this year. 2400 lbs in summer and another 1200 in the fall. Ultraviolet Vision Yeah, honeybees have that . Honeybees and other pollinator insects have the ability to see the world through UV lights .... Their ability to see ultraviolet light creates nectar bulls-eyes on flowers and plants to help them along in their collection . Honeybees have the ability to see the world in a completely different way than what we do. To us, it's a world that looks sparkly and full of magic . To them, it's just a normal looking every day .
