Another successful day at producing a new water simply; this one is for a food processor in the Annapolis Valley. The well is blowing at a rate of 120 to 140 igpm before development. Having the driller trip up and down the well to better develop the production zones before calling it a day. Now time to start planning for pumping tests.

Potentially 750,000 Private Water Wells Affected by Recent Hurricanes --------------------------------------------------------------------- (excerpt from US National Ground Water Association letter) Many private water wells were flooded by hurricanes and their aftermath during the past year. The recent string of hurricanes having possibly affected wells includes Matthew (North and South Carolina, October 2016), Harvey (Texas, August 2017), Irma (Florida, September 2017), and ...Maria (Puerto Rico, September 2017). Using the U.S. Census Bureau’s 1990 Household Water Supply Survey, potentially 750,000 or more private wells may have been affected by hurricane effects of flooding, high water table connection to septic systems, flood debris damage, or related incidents. To derive this number of wells, state county boundary maps were overlain with National Weather Service rainfall intensity maps to identify the counties and wells potentially affected. The following numbers of private wells (drilled and dug) were tabulated for counties receiving 10 inches or more of rainfall during the respective hurricanes that struck these states: Texas 215,906 Florida 306,382 South Carolina 92,477 North Carolina 150,692 Total 765,457. Many household wells were likely affected in Puerto Rico from Hurricane Maria, but no county census count is available for them. If a well has been flooded: * Do not drink the water or wash with it, but use an alternative supply such as bottled water * Stay away from the well pump while it’s flooded to avoid electrical shock * Get a qualified water well contractor or pump installer to - Clean and turn on the pump - Flush the well - Disinfect the well - Perform any other necessary maintenance * Check with the local emergency management agency about any guidance relating to local conditions or specific contamination threats due to area flooding. Bacterial contamination is to be expected in a flooded well, so disinfection of the well system after it has been pumped out and cleaned will be necessary, possibly along with wellhead repair, well relocation and/or elevation. This work should all be done by water well system professionals.
