On the left is my personal bag. It's the first leather bag I ever made. It holds a very special place for me. I always put it on display next to a new bag with the same leather to show how the leather ages. But people keep trying to buy my bag. I always say "That's my bag, it's not for sale. I mean everything has a price I guess, but I wouldn't let that go for less than $20,000. Even then it would be a tough call." I figured I should make reproductions of that bag at a more... reasonable price. The bag on the right is one of those reproductions. I've eliminated the features that don't work from the old bag but kept the features that make up the essence of the original like the pencil closure, the backpack conversation, and the veg-tanned leather. I'll only ever make one at a time so it's the most rare of my production pieces. Aside from mine, there are less than 5 in the world. I just happen to have the next one ready to go. Even with all the privilege afforded me, I have suffered the lack of dignity of #nowheretopoop. I have colitis, an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the colon. This inflammation causes a plethora of bowel related symptoms, most of which I'll spare you the details. The most humiliating symptom is the sudden and sometimes uncontrollable need to . It's one of those diseases that someone can look normal while experiencing issues they're trying to conceal. There ar...e treatments for the symptoms though. My gastroenterologist is starting me in a new treatment that's administered intravenously once every 8 weeks. It costs $3500 per dose! I'm lucky enough to be married to an angel with the skills to keep a job with supplimental health benefits and live in a province that will pick up the tab after an income adjusted deductable and earn a decent living being self employed. I can't imagine having to face colitis along with homelessness. Finding a washroom can be hard in the best of times, especially if you can't just drive to find something. Often the businesses in low income neighborhoods don't make their washrooms available. If you want to help, contact @1justcity and donate to their dignity washroom campaign at Oak Table. My friend who is a social worker brought her Earth and Hide backpack in for repair. I'm always happy to repair my products. With this one I kept thinking about her and the work she does while I completed the repair. I think about how outraged we are at the injustices in the world, and how outraged some people seem to be at the wrong things sometimes. I love making things. I need to be doing things with my hands. I wish I knew that about myself when I was a teenager. For me, it's a form of therapy. They're able to direct bill insurance too!... Second, changing glasses feels much more important to me this year. This time of year is always a bit transitional for me. All the years hard work plays out with the holiday gift giving season. With everything going on this year, we've all been forced to change in a lot of different ways. We've had to be extremely flexible. This change of glasses is a positive change that I could control.

Sometimes people ask what's my favorite product to make. I'd have to say the Luella tote. It's a crowd favorite and I love being able to make something that people love so much. It's a decently big bag that uses a lot of leather so it's rather valuable. It's a relatively simple pattern so it's easy to cut and put together. There's a lot of sewing which is I've of my favorite tasks in what I do. What's your favorite Earth and Hide piece?

First up today was finishing belts. Just like when I go to in-person markets, I don't size the belt until I get the order. That allows me to not have to guess how many of each color, size, and buckle combination I need to keep on hand. The cutoff gets added to a pile of scraps that will get used for bag handles. That's just one little thing I do to be more efficient and be a good steward of the materials I use.
