After decades of public education to prevent park users habituating #bears because of improperly stored food and garbage, now there is a new problem - hot tubs.
Parks Canada made this wildlife documentary in 1930 featuring AMAZING footage of a beaver family and rare footage of Grey Owl, the famous conservationist. Grey Owl is also famous for falsely claiming Apache heritage. An excerpt from The Canadian Encyclopedia: "Although born in England, he portrayed himself as the son of a Scottish man and Apache woman. His articles and books stressed wilderness conservation and became bestsellers in Canada and Britain. Shortly after Grey Owl died in 1938, a newspaper article exposed his real identity as Archibald Belaney." His cabin where he lived and wrote is located in Prince Albert National Park, Saskatchewan. Common Juniper is an evergreen shrub found throughout North America and also occurs naturally in Asia and Europe. The 'berries' are used as a flavoring agent, like black pepper. They are dried, ground up and used in specialty sausages or as the main flavoring in gin. The 'berry' is really a cone, which is probably why it's the least favorite food of black bears, comprising less than 1% of their fall diet after summer food sources have been exhausted. . . . This is a live streamed event on Youtube to get a behind the scenes look at how Parks does ecosystem check ups using sampling of benthic macroinvertebrates, AKA bugs that live underwater! These bugs can tell us a lot about the water quality and the conditions of aquatic ecosystems in national parks.
What do you do when Covid shuts down international tourism? Take the time to step back, deep dive into learning and learn more about the incredible ecology, geology and cultural history of mountains here and around the world! This is a fantastic online certificate course offered by the University of Alberta and is a suggested course offering for Canadian Rockies Interpretive Guides and Canada Parks Volunteers, both of which I'm proud to be :) Gabrielle Abernethy Owner, Eart...h & Pine Outdoor Inc. Royal Alberta Museum in Edmonton, Alberta has a stunning collection of Alberta's natural and human history. Just like microchips, hunting technology became smaller and more efficient. On the right are spear heads 9,000-10,000 yrs, the middle are 2300 yrs projectiles that were attached to darts and then hurled with a specialized stick called an atlatl, and on the left are ~1000 yrs arrowheads used with bows. Each technological advance allowed the point to be delivered farther and with deadlier force. Archaeological Society of Alberta- Calgary Centre
It's hard to overstate how important beavers were to the fledgling economy of Canada in the 18th century. Our Yamnuska Meadows Tour, launching in 2021, will be exploring this very topic while we visit some beautiful beaver habitat. . . . #beavers #beaverfur #canadiantours #canadianrockies #canadianrockiestours #banfftours #canmoretours #calgarytours #banff #canmore #calgary

Bryozoan fossil with its modern day look alike. The fenestrae or tiny 'windows' held individual zooids. This colony looked like a delicately folded curtain of lace.
