OH NO! MUM'S MAKING SOLS AGAIN. QUICK! RUN FOR COVER! As it's Sunday, I thought it would be a good day to get out my still and clean it to get ready for the Spring blossoms that will soon be here. When I bought my still years ago, I wanted a ‘traditional’ one without an electrical plug because I wanted to learn how to create hydrosols over any available heat source, so I chose the alembic copper still (circa 790 AD).... What I didn’t realize at the time was that extracting is an art that has to be practiced. If the pressure from the bunion releases too much heat for the cooling coils to keep up with, it explodes. And I’m not talking about a minor ‘pop’ kind of explosion, but rather, one that will cause the top to fly off with such power that whatever is in its way will meet with serious harm. So the first time I used it, it exploded in my kitchen when my youngest was just a small boy. He happened to be running through the kitchen at the exact moment it exploded, and it narrowly missed him when it rocketed itself into the air with such force that it hit the ceiling before rebounding back down and landing into my fruit basket on my kitchen island. The mess of soggy, chopped up herbs was EVERYWHERE from floor to ceiling, and my two kids quickly learned to take defensive measures whenever they saw the still come out. (I’m now laughing out loud as I remember this!) With practice, I eventually learned the secret of feeling the bunion for heat and pressure to anticipate when the cooling coils need feeding with cold water. I also learned the ‘traditional’ trick of making a dough with rye flour to seal the joints, as this really does help a lot. If you fancy getting one, try googling ‘alembic copper still.’ Of course, now you can buy digital stills that measure and regulate the pressure for you so that you don’t have to risk an explosion resulting in a demoralizing mess everywhere, but where’s the adventure in that, right? Seeds need darkness to germinate and only require light after they sprout, so cover your seeds with newspaper and mist with a spray bottle to maintain the moisture and humidity in your seed dome while also giving your seeds the darkness they need. As I'm all about Celtic lore and Wales was the origin of my family name, I'm excited to work with them. Did you know that these stones were used to build Stonehenge? The history and lore: Preseli Bluestones are the stones that were used in the building of Stonehenge 5,000 years ago and are only found in the Preseli Hills in Pembrokeshire, West Wales.... In ancient times, stones were considered to be holy and magical objects, homes to spirits and the Gods. In local Welsh legends and folklore it is said that the Preseli Bluestones possess healing and magical powers. It is no surprise then that this rare stone should be used for this Island's greatest megalithic structure - the very root of all our architecture. Preseli Dolerite (Bluestone) is a Metamorphic Igneous rock made up of Plagioclase Feldspar and Augite and is a Pyroxene mineral (calcium magnesium aluminosilicate. Ca, Mg, FE, AI, (Al,Si,206). It is medium grained dark and heavy rock, harder than granite. Preseli Bluestone tools, such as axes, used by our ancestors to carve granite, have been discovered. The Preseli Hills are located in Pembrokeshire in the South West of Wales and have the reputation of being one of the sources for the legends of Merlin and King Arthur. The Welsh legends called the Mabinogion, which means Tales of Youth, come from here and it is said that the way into 'Annwn', the Welsh fairyland, can be found here too. Indeed, Pentre Ifan, sometimes called 'The Womb of Cerridwen', which is also built of Preseli Bluestone and located within the Preseli Hills, is said to be one of the main gateways into the realm of Fairy. These mystical Bluestone jewels were rediscovered on 3rd May 2000 when all the seven inner Planets of the Zodiac were in the sign of Taurus. Legend has it that Merlin transported stones from here to Stonehenge for the construction of Camelot and King Arthur's Round Table. Of the 7 circles that go to make up Stonehenge , the 5th circle and inner horseshoe are constructed from stones known as 'Bluestones' which originated in the Preseli Hills. Of the 45 remaining stones at Stonehenge, 9 remain standing in the 5th circle and 7 in the horseshoe. The tradition of building stone circles continues to this day in Wales when the Gorsedd of Bards erect a new stone circle each year for their Eisteddfod.
