A single contest can result in more than 1,000 animal deaths within the span of a single night, and a lack of fair chase principles means that the predators being stalked for slaughter can be lured by distress calls and the promise of food. It is estimated that in the U.S. alone, more than half a million coyotes are killed by humans each year about one per minute.

Canada’s boreal forest is the world’s largest intact forest, but industrial logging operations are chipping away at it, undermining its role in stabilizing the global climate and as a refuge for many of North America’s iconic species. At the global scale, Canada has ranked third behind Russia and Brazil in intact forest landscape loss. A new report by NRDC, By A Thousand Cuts: How Powerful Companies’ Wood Sourcing is Degrading Canada’s Boreal Forest, reveals what that means on the ground. This report finds that global wood and pulp suppliers operating in Canada’s boreal forest are failing to implement critical social and environmental safeguards, putting the rights of Indigenous communities, threatened species, and a critical carbon storehouse at risk.

Earthroots, a Toronto-based conservation organization, said while the flat-rate pilot project may be affordable to some, the price hike is enough to drive people out of the park's backcountry and off the grid. It is enough to drive people into unregulated Crown Land where there are no rules and bad camping behaviour is tolerated and tacitly encouraged, the organization said in a press release Wednesday.

In recent years, the Provincial Government has dramatically increased the use of Ministry Zoning Orders (MZOs) to override municipal planning authority. Hidden within Schedule 3 of Bill 257, the new Bill would remove the requirement for MZOs to respect the values identified in the Provincial Policy Statement. This is unacceptable and has the potential to crush years of scientific study, thoughtful analysis and public consultation. Earthroots is calling on all of our loyal s...upporters to take action now! Please consider sending an email to the Minister of Municipal Affairs through our Action Alert: https://earthroots.good.do/stoptheabuseofministryzoningo//

TORONTO -- Ontario Parks has been quietly running a pilot project in which it charges a flat fee, forcing many campers to pay at least 300 per cent more for a backcountry site than previous seasons. The provincial government is in its second year of testing the flat fees for backcountry camping at the Massasauga and the Temagami cluster of parks, charging $40.75 and $32.50 per night respectively, regardless of the size of a group. Previously, campers were charged $9 a night per person.

A virtual rally was held by Grassy Narrows First Nation to demand full compensation for everyone in the community to address the ongoing human and cultural costs of mercury poisoning. The rally, which had more than 1500 people registered to attend, included a number of familiar faces speaking about these ongoing impacts, including Chief Randy Fobister, Grassy Narrows mother and environmental health coordinator Judy Da Silva, as well as Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg scholar Leanne Betasamosake Simpson and Ojibwe journalist Tanya Talaga.

Are the wolves of Yellowstone National Park the first line of defense against a terrible disease that preys on herds of wildlife? That’s the question for a research project underway in the park, and preliminary results suggest that the answer is yes.
