Would you like some inspiration to participate in science fair this year? Read Hannah, Mark and Erin's story! Hannah Boone, Mark Hewitt, and Erin Baker are classmates in the MUN Medicine class of 2022 and science fair alumni. They came into medicine through different paths (Hannah from music, Mark from psychology, and Erin from physics) and were shaped in different ways by their participation in science fair. Hannah says Science fair gave me the opportunity to meet people fr...om across the country who were curious + passionate about STEAM. As a participant, I learned how the arts + science + advocacy can be integrated in the world of medicine Mark says "Participating in science fair definitely cemented my decision to go into Medicine!! Without science fair, I wouldn't have had an early exposure to the biomedical sciences and who knows what I would be doing now !" Erin says When I participated in science fairs, I was always inspired by the incredible curiosity, work ethic, and capability of my peers. Science fair gave me the confidence to pursue goals that I previously thought were unattainable

How can Science Fair affect you or your students? Check out Stephanie's story: Stephanie Gallant is an Eastern NL Science and Technology Fair Alumnus, having participated from 2006-2008. She placed at the regional fair with a silver medal in 2006, and gold medals in both 2007 and 2008. She was additionally selected to represent the province as a member of the Newfoundland team at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in 2007 with her project "Mussels: Pollution Solution?", and again i...n 2008, with "Larch Tea: An Antibacterial Solution?". Stephanie also participated in the Sanofi-Aventis BioTech Challenge (now BioGenius Canada) during these two years, allowing her to partner with a mentor at Memorial University, and therefore use more involved methods and tests to explore her scientific questions. Stephanie now holds a BSc in Chemistry from Memorial University, and is currently a PhD Candidate in Chemistry at Memorial. She works to develop new materials for use in optical environmental sensors, aiming to detect harmful organic pollutants in water. Hoping to work in the R&D sector into the future, Stephanie enjoys these applied aspects of physics and chemistry, and the creative problem solving required in everyday science research. "I fully believe that my participation in science fairs as a teen helped me to become the scientist that I am today. From the experimental design and problem solving when things don't go quite right, to the public speaking and communication skills required to share and explain ideas, my science projects and the experiences around them taught me countless things beyond the classroom and standard scientific information. I would encourage any student with the opportunity to do a science fair project to go for it!"
