Job interviews can be scary - especially if you’ve never had one before! Luckily, the participants in our Horizons Work Experience program now have a bit of practice! Ferryland Foodland is showing its community firsthand the importance of inclusion through its commitment to inclusive hiring! Through the Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities Program at Easter Seals NL, Ferryland Foodland hired Jordan Pomeroy, a young man embarking on the workforce in his first job. Being able to support Jordan as he develops new skills has been a benefit to everyone on our team, says store manager Della Jordan. Our Horizons Work Experience Program once again had the pleasure of hosting Heidi Dixon of First Light for Indigenous Cultural Diversity Training! This three-hour workshop explored some of the rich history and culture of Métis, First Nations, and Inuit peoples in Canada, with a focus on Newfoundland and Labrador. This was a fantastic opportunity and educational experience for us all, and we look forward to using this knowledge and awareness in the workplace and our day-to-...day lives. A feel-good story! Noah Randell had been looking to find employment that he was excited about but living in a smaller community, with a disability and adding a pandemic had made that a challenge for him to achieve. As luck should have it, due to the pandemic Cloud River Academy had to change the way they were delivering cafeteria services and the principal of the school thought that Noah, given his interest in food service, would be the perfect person for the job but identi...fied that he would need some mentoring to help him develop the skills and knowledge for the position. Through Easter Seals NL’s Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities program, Noah was able to avail of a wage subsidy as well as access funding for a short-term job coach. Noah and the school are grateful for the support the Opportunities Fund program was able to provide. With this support, Noah is taking the first steps to sustainable, long-term employment. Easter Seals NL, as the Community Coordinator for the Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities, offers funding to assist people who identify with disabilities secure the necessary equipment to assist them further their careers. Christine Francis, the Executive Director of St. Michael's Printshop was able to avail of the funding to purchase an iPad Pro to assist her in work. ‘Through Easter Seals, I was able to purchase an iPad Pro to use for both working at home a...nd on-site. My job requires a mix of administration, design, social media and bookkeeping, all of which can be done on the iPad.’ Christine said. We are so happy to be able to assist Christine purchase an important piece of equipment to allow her to succeed in her career! Easter Seals is thrilled to announce the graduation of eight participants from the Horizons program! These hard-working young people earned job skills, certifications, and valuable work experience through Horizons, and we’re happy to see them moving forward. Who's GAME for a 75-HOUR GAMING MARATHON with Sandbox Gaming?! ***HOW THE MARATHON WORKS*** Sandbox Gaming has been around since 2010, raising over $110,000 for charities in Newfoundland and Labrador by playing video games. A vigil is planned this evening outside St. John’s city hall to mark the International Day for Persons with Disabilities. Those in attendance will have flashlights on them to help shine a light on some of the issues the disability community face on a regular basis.

Jordan Pomeroy, like most young adults, wanted to find a job so he would be able to gain experience, independence, develop skills and have money so he is able to do the things he wants without depending on his parents! The only difference is Jordan identifies as having a disability, which has made the entry into the workforce a little more challenging but not unattainable. With the assistance of the Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities program, Jordan was a...ble to secure employment in his community with Ferryland Foodland as a grocery clerk. The welcoming and supportive environment created by the staff and customers at Ferryland Foodland has made the transition to the workforce easier for Jordan. He is working hard and we are looking forward to hearing all about Jordan’s future successes!
