Great news for the invasive species world and all wild places! While more is required to ensure the protection of both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems from invasives, small steps add up to giant leaps.
We are so grateful for our Program Manager, Kendal Benesh! Thank you Kootenay Conservation Program for this wonderful interview & article summing up what we're all about.
It's World Soil Day! Our soils support 95 percent of all food production, and by 2060, our soils will be asked to give us as much food as we have consumed in the last 500 years. They filter our water. They are one of our most cost-effective reservoirs for sequestering carbon. ... They are our foundation for biodiversity. And they are vibrantly alive, teeming with 10,000 pounds of biological life in every acre. Yet in the last 150 years, we’ve lost half of the basic building block that makes soil productive. The societal and environmental costs of soil loss and degradation in the United States alone are now estimated to be as high as $85 billion every single year. Like any relationship, our living soil needs our tenderness. It’s time we changed everything we thought we knew about soil. This 60-minute documentary features innovative farmers and soil health experts from throughout the U.S. Join us in celebrating soil and it's unsung vibrance by taking some time to learn more about it!
There may be snow on the ground, but that doesn't necessarily mean these prickly little burs are completely gone!
Today is #GivingTuesday. Please consider donating to the Invasive Species Council of BC, your gift will benefit British Columbian communities and landscapes for years to come. https://www.bcinvasives.ca/donate/donate-today
What will drive future impacts of invasive species? Understanding the answer to this question is crucial for policy-making and management efforts. In a paper p...ublished this summer, F. Essl and colleagues found that 3 main drivers of biological invasions (transport, climate change and socioeconomic change) were predicted to significantly affect future impacts of alien species on biodiversity.
