Breathing for Stress Management This breathing practice is named "box breathing" and appropriately so, based on the four sided pattern followed! This practice is meant to instil calmness in the body while simultaneously increasing focus and alertness. It is effective in easing symptoms of anxiety. This can also be done before meals to reduce the effects of stress on digestion! ... How to practice box breathing: To begin, sit in a comfortable chair or in a way that your back is supported for relaxation, and you can plant your feet on the floor to ground down. Exhale air from lungs, and relax your shoulders. Inhale slowly through the nose for a count of 4. Notice your abdomen expanding, then your upper chest. At the top of the inhale, hold the breath for a count of 4. Slowly and with control, exhale for a count of 4 through your nose. Try to notice your upper chest deflating first, followed by the abdomen. Hold the exhale for a count of 4, and then repeat

Let's chat about vitamin D Low vitamin D levels are quite common for those of us experiencing a Canadian winter, but it isn't always as easy as just supplementing it! Often times people supplement Vitamin D and are still below the optimal range to maintain overall health, so supplementation simply maintains depleted levels. When it comes to supplementing vitamin D, the most effective treatments are offered when we know what your levels are as an individual. From there we ar...e able to recommend dosages and timelines that will bring levels up to an optimal range and then maintain healthy levels! On the flip side, since it is a fat-soluble vitamin it can accumulate in toxic levels in the body which is why we recommend running tests to check your levels We keep Vitamin D drops in stock all winter, and offer testing at both clinics! Link in bio to book your testing!

Serotonin and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in mood regulation. Many studies suggest that disruption of serotonin contributes to the onset of SAD. Those with SAD produce more SERT, a protein that affects serotonin transport and is more abundant in winter months than summer where sunlight generally keeps SERT levels naturally low. As sunlight diminishes in the fall, a corresponding decrease in serotonin activity also occ...urs. Higher SERT levels lead to lower serotonin activity which can result in depressive symptoms. Serotonin impacts the following: Mood. Known as our "feel-good" hormone and initiates fight-or-flight, and directly impacts levels of mood, happiness, and anxiety. Digestion. Fun fact: most of our serotonin is created by enterochromaffin (EC) cells in the lining of our GI tract, playing a role in the gut-brain axis. Serotonin also impacts nausea - if we consume something that aggravates the digestive tract the gut produces serotonin to deal with the irritant through diarrhea or stimulating nausea in the brain. Bone mass and density: There are correlations between high levels of serotonin present in bones and an increased risk for osteoporosis. Book in to chat with our ND’s (link in bio) about how to balance serotonin levels and take a preventive approach to the onset of SAD!

Postpartum depression Often in the same thought as the postpartum period is postpartum depression, and it can be incredibly difficult for new moms to navigate. Here are some of the things that our ND’s look into in the postpartum period to help reduce the likelihood of developing postpartum depression! Iron: During pregnancy, your body requires more hemoglobin so it shouldn’t be surprising that iron requirements increase! In postpartum, there are strong correlations between... low iron levels and postpartum depressive symptoms. Vitamin D: Low vitamin D levels are associated with postpartum depression and Vitamin D is proven to be protective against it. Having serum Vitamin D levels checked is important to ensure appropriate supplementation is maintained. Omega-3’s: Low Omega-3 levels during pregnancy and lactation is a risk factor for postpartum depression. DHA supports healthy brain development in newborns as well as overall brain health in adults. Our ND’s have recommendations of EPA-DHA balance for various stages in of pregnancy. Acupuncture: Can’t stop, won’t stop! When it comes to postpartum depression, there are studies that link reduced estrogen levels with depressive symptoms. In these studies, acupuncture was shown to increase estrogen levels to reduce depressive symptoms. Breastfeeding: Breastfeeding has protective effects for mothers by inducing calmness, decreasing stress, and increasing nurturing desires. While there are many considerations here (milk production or frequency for example), breastfeeding can help to combat postpartum depressive symptoms, and our ND’s are very well-versed in chatting breastfeeding and any difficulties surrounding it! Yoga: Yoga has been shown to decrease anxiety and depressive symptoms, and increase feelings of well-being and this stress reduction can be very beneficial for new moms. While carving the time out for yourself can feel difficult if not impossible, engaging in some light movement connected to your breath can be very helpful in reducing postpartum depression. Book with one of our ND’s (link in bio) to learn more about how we help navigate postpartum, you deserve all of the support!
