Topic of the day Calcium and Vitamin D Supplementation in Adults Disclaimer: Discuss with your doctor--and especially your pharmacist--if calcium supplementation is right for you, as there are potential drug interactions to consider. Nowadays, unless you are diagnosed with osteoporosis, have low blood calcium or have poor kidney function, taking calcium supplements is no longer routinely recommended. Excessive calcium intake (over 2000-2500mg/day) has been linked with incre...ased risk of heart attack. This is because calcium is involved in how blood clots form. Generally speaking, the dietary reference intake for adults is 1000mg/day of elemental calcium and 800 units/day of vitamin D. Women over 50 and men over 70 can target 1200mg/day for calcium. It’s preferable to get your calcium through food sources. Depending on your diet, you could already be getting enough calcium. A glass of milk = 300mg; container of yogurt = 200mg; 1 oz cheese = 200mg. Plant based milks and some orange juices are typically fortified to the same degree (check the label). Don’t forget that calcium is found in dark green leafy vegetables, such as broccoli and kale. Also consider fish with edible soft bones, such as canned sardines, salmon, and tuna. Many patients take prescription acid reducers called proton pump inhibitors for acid reflux, e.g. omeprazole, rabeprazole, pantoprazole, etc. Long term use (defined as 4 weeks or longer) is associated with reduced calcium absorption from food; However, these drugs may be necessary and appropriate for patients who take anti inflammatory pain relievers, blood thinners or corticosteroids. Ask your doctor to re-evaluate your situation and consider lifestyle modifications to control acid reflux, if possible. Getting adequate vitamin D from food can be somewhat challenging, but can be found in eggs, milk, fatty fish, and some mushrooms; meanwhile, sun exposure is limited for us Manitobans. About two thirds of Canadians actually have adequate blood levels of vitamin D. Most supplements on the market will have 1000 units of vitamin D per pill, which is fine for daily use, as the tolerable upper intake limit is 4000 units/day. In Selkirk, a new service is available and is currently in the pilot testing stage. Consider volunteering to try it out at no charge in exchange for your feedback. iAccompany is a personalized service where a nurse will meet you at your home, travel with you to the clinic, sit on the appointment taking notes, assist with post-appointment activities, and see you home safely. Post visit, you and your loved one can view the same day report by logging into the app from your devic...e. It is a summary of the appointment that describes the outcome of the doctor's visit, responses to questions you wanted to have asked, and a clearly defined treatment plan. Peace of mind to soothe the apprehension that comes with knowing that mom or dad needs to visit the doctor, but their adult son or daughter is unable to attend with them. Contact Mario Elbardisy at 204-510-2897 or [email protected]. Visit iaccompany.ca to learn more.

We've noticed patients personally come into the clinic to book doctor appointments. To reduce contacts, it would please us more to receive a call instead. Stay home and stay safe!

We're up to 85 signatures, please share again to help us recruit a pediatrician at Easton Place. Digital signatures are being collected at https://www.change.org/InterlakePediatrician (After signing, simply close the website to skip the donation). Below is the statement from the petition: -- The Interlake Needs a Pediatrician -- Residents of the Interlake Eastern Health Region are concerned about the lack of health care services for our children and youth. Currently, no pedia...trician is accessible in the region. Families are constrained by having to travel to Winnipeg, where pediatric clinics are all too often at capacity. With increasing awareness about developmental health and mental well being, young families are looking for specialized practitioners to help them grow and prosper in the community. This petition aims to prove to the authorities that the Interlake needs a local pediatrician to call our own. Please show us your support by signing today! See more
