MARCH 21ST IS HUMAN RIGHTS DAY IN SOUTH AFRICA Human Rights Day is a national holiday that is commemorated annually on March 21st in order to remind South Afric...ans about the sacrifices that accompanied the struggle for the attainment of democracy in beloved South Africa. Human Rights Day is historically linked with March 21st 1960, and the events that took place in Sharpeville. On that day, 69 people died and 180 were wounded when police fired on a peaceful crowd that had gathered in protest against the Pass laws. The South African democratic government declared March 21st to be Human Rights Day - to commemorate and honour those who fought for the liberation and the rights we enjoy today.

St. Patrick’s Day is a global celebration of what it means to be Irish; the spirit, the determination, the creativity and the indefinable qualities that make th...e Irish people who they are. Once a year, in cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg, the streets are filled with South Africans and tourists wearing strange green clothing and drinking green beer - a sign that St Patrick's Day has arrived. Here in Canada, we celebrate the holiday by day drinking and partaking in the celebration of Irish culture with parades, special foods, music, dancing, and a whole lot of green. Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!

BRRR... COLD WEATHER TIPS & TRICKS Winter has hit Toronto full force and temperatures this week hit a low of -25! Here are some cold weather tips & tricks for... you to try: - Always wear a hat made for cold weather when you step outside. - Turn on the ceiling fan, which pushes warm air downwards. - Switch between hot and cold in the shower to improve circulation. - Block drafts under doorways with a pool noodle. - Two words: programmable thermostat. - To trick a locked thermostat that you don’t have access to, place some ice near it and it will perceive the room being colder than it actually is. - Dress your windows up in warmer clothes. Replace thin curtains with heavier wool or fleece drapes. - Go ahead, bake all day - using your oven heats up the whole house. - Stuff your coat pockets (and gloves) with those ingenious little air-activated hand warmers. And to really warm yourself up on those particularly cold evenings, why not try this South African Coffee treat: SOUTH AFRICAN AMARULA COFFEE INGREDIENTS: 3 parts brewed coffee (Koffiehuis Medium Roast Or Original Frisco) 1 part Amarula (1-2 shots) Brown sugar, to taste Whipped cream, to taste DIRECTIONS: Brew the coffee to desired heat Mix the Amarula in Sweeten with brown sugar Add a dollop of whipped cream Garnish with cinnamon, if desired

THE HISTORY OF MRS. H.S. BALL’S CHUTNEY SAUCES Here is the story of how Mrs. Ball’s Chutney sauces came to be: Few lovers of the saucy Mrs. H.S. Ball’s Chutney... will know that our recipe survived a shipwreck! In 1852, the SS Quanza was shipwrecked off East London, South Africa, en route from Canada to Australia. It was Captain Adkins and his wife who saved a blueprint for what was to become one of SA’s most unique and priceless culinary icons. This secret recipe was passed on to their daughter, Amelia, in 1865, who later married Mr. Herbert Sandleton Ball. During 1914, demand for the wholesome, piquant and fruity flavour grew bigger and bigger. And soon the Ball kitchen was transformed into a makeshift production line. Mrs. H.S. Ball’s Chutney was home, and ready to tickle the taste buds of chutney lovers across the globe. A family name and soon to be the most loved chutney in South Africa, Mrs. H.S. Ball’s Chutney was created with the Ball family crest on the top of the label. The Woodstock factory opened in 1917 to meet escalating demand, and our most-loved bottle started to travel around the world. Eat Sum More carries a wide variety of Mrs. Ball’s Chutney Sauces and you can find them (and buy them) in our Online Store: https://eatsummore.com//jams-preserves/mrs-balls-chutney-v

THE HERITAGE OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN FLAG The South African flag was originally designed by the former State Herald, Mr. Frederick Brownell. It was proudly hoisted... for the very first time at 12AM on April 27th back in 1994. The first democratic elections began on that very same day and April 27th is now celebrated as Freedom Day in South Africa. FUN FACT = At the time of it's inception, the South African flag was the only flag in the world to comprise of 6 colours in its primary design - red, white, blue, green, yellow and black.

This was such a heartwarming letter for us to receive last week... This really makes it all worthwhile! "Eat Sum More Team: Thank you so much for your delive...ry. I just wanted to say how grateful I am to have received the Stoney soda from your company. My family is from Kenya and Tanzania, Stoney Tangawizi was my late grandfather's favorite soda. I remember as a child growing up in Canada he would always make me taste whichever random ginger beer he could find in the grocery store. Finally in 2017 by siblings and parents and I traveled to East Africa for the first time, we got to finally try the ginger soda my grandfather tried to share with us. I immediately fell in love with the soda and have been searching for it in Canada ever since. June 1 would have been my grandfather's 82nd birthday but my grandmother had to spend it alone. After receiving my order from your team, I put on my face mask, grabbed my hand sanitizer, and went to visit my grandmother. I dropped off a takeaway dinner from a local restaurant that she likes and I passed had the reception desk also pass on a can of Stoney. I stood on the grass outside of her apartment building as she came to balcony and thanked me for the meal. After I left she called my father in tears, she was so happy to receive the soda. She immediately opened it, poured it into a mug, and warmed it in the microwave. Apparently this is how she and my grandfather used to enjoy it back in Kenya. The rest of the sodas I split amongst some friends and we reminisced about Kenya and Tanzania and laughed over Zoom. Thank you so much for helping me create memories for my grandmother and my friends in this difficult time. I will be ordering again soon. Regards, Adil"

THE HISTORY OF EAT SUM MORE - SOUTH AFRICAN MEATS & GROCERY STORE Our story begins with my late oupa and ouma -George and Leah Slimowitz in Vanderbijlpark. They... owned and operated a butchery called The Golden Highway Butchery and people used to come from miles away to stock up on their meat for the month, and in particular the Biltong, Droewors and Boerewors. Going to the slaughterhouse early in the morning with my oupa, watching him select his choice of meat for the store, unbeknownst to me at the time, would come in good standing in years to come. Back at the butchery my oupa used to mumble in Yiddish It’s all in de spices whilst making Biltong. My late father, Louis Slimowitz had a number of butcheries in Klerksdorp and Stillfontein, and he also used to mutter, It’s all in the spices. Growing up in a farm environment in Ficksburg, I was always given the task of spicing the meats and I quickly became the mutterer of It’s all in the spices. Now in our 3rd generation Slimowitz family grocery store, headed up by the family matriarch, our mother Rita, we still mutter, It’s all in the spices. We import all of our spices from South Africa and blend them in the store to produce the finest Biltong, Drywors, Chili Bites, Shavings and Boerewors, which people still travel for miles to acquire. We encourage you to visit our online store www.eatsummore.com where we offer no contact, curbside pick-ups and speedy home deliveries.
