Eat What You Sow 07.05.2021

It's the time of year where you need to keep a close eye on your squash hoard. This Rouge vif d'Etampes pumpkin was still looking great last week, and is suddenly riddled with moldy spots. I happen to think it's beautiful, but I'll be processing and cooking the non-moldy half before the whole thing looks like this. #squash #wintersquash #pumpkins #larder #storagecrops #hungrygap #mold #growyourownfood #gyo #growwhatyoueat #eatwhatyougrow #inseason #allotmentlove #kitchengarden #potager #gramyourgarden #gardenersofinstagram #victorygarden #foodsecurity #100footdiet #homegrown #homesteadlife #instagramhomesteaders #veggiegarden #instagardeners #frommygarden #igrewthis

I don't generally consider myself a neatnik, but there's something about this interplanted garlic and lettuce that satisfies me to my core. Every spring, my overwintered greenhouse lettuce goes to seed. I save a bunch, but I always seem to miss a bunch too, and the lost seeds wait in the soil all summer (too hot to germinate), before finally taking off in late winter. The lettuce that I intentionally planted for fall and early spring harvests were suddenly very crowded, so I... pulled 60 of the seedlings today and planted them outside between the garlic shoots. In a couple of weeks, we'll have lettuce coming out of our ears, and the plants will finish up just as the garlic is getting tall enough to shade them out. Winner winner chickpea dinner! #lazygardening #selfsown #freefood #interplanting #nodiggardening #lazyhomesteader #igrewthis #growsomethinggreen #greenfingers #gardenersofinstagram #growyourfood #garlic #homegrown #lettuce #inmygardentoday #kitchengarden #potager #allotmentlove #backyardtotable #homesteading #veganfarm #plantsteading

If you're looking for a delicious way to celebrate Saint Patrick's Day from the comfort of your own home (and who isn't right now?), might I suggest a delectable loaf of Irish soda bread? A lot of these simple loaves end up rather brick like, but not only is this one egg and dairy free, it's also moist, tender, and scone like - completely unsuitable for use as a building material. Studded with raisins and home grown currants, it's incredible right out of the oven, but it also... makes excellent toast, and freezes beautifully. . In honor of #Caturday, I would like to introduce the newest member of our family. His name is Cedar, and he's 11 weeks old. Cedar's mom was rescued outside a local rugby club and we're so grateful they stepped in to make sure his family was given a chance at a better life than they would have otherwise had. He came to us through @vokra, a fantastic local kitten rescue group, and he's been living with our amazing friend and her boys, @beingq, since early January. They are suc...h wonderful foster parents and have given so much love to all of their fosters over the years. As a result, this little boy is the most incredibly loving snuggle bug, and I can't wait for Dany and him to finally meet. Dany has been increasingly lonely since our pup died last May, so we thought it was time to get her a companion. The timing couldn't have been more perfect, and it feels like the perfect way to kick off spring! Lots more about these soon to be kitty pals in stories! #caturdaycuties #kittensofinstagram #kittenstagram #kittensofig #rescuekitten #firstdayofspring #adoptdontshop #tabbykitten #kittybeans #furbaby #kittysiblings

According to the WHO The use of antibiotics in food animal production contributes to increased drug resistance... Approximately half of current antibiotic production is used in agriculture, to promote growth and prevent disease as well as to treat sick animals With such massive use, those drug resistant microbes generated in animals can be later transferred to humans. So not only does animal agriculture contribute hugely to climate change and global injustice, it also plays a huge role in the creation of drug-resistant pathogens and future pandemics. It has never been more clear that WE NEED SYSTEM CHANGE if we are to avoid the threats posed by animal agriculture We need to transition to a just and sustainable plant-based food system So join us! Help make this goal a reality. Sign up to become an Animal Rebellion volunteer, or make a donation via the link in the Animal Rebellion bio! Don't be like me. I consider myself an organized gardener: I label everything and draw detailed maps of the garden so I know what's growing where. That being said, I am also the person who just spent the better part of an afternoon trying to figure out which potato varieties were which. I knew exactly what they were when I dug them, and was going to label them when I got around to it, but life got busy (oh wait, no it didn't). Who'd have thought that over the course of four m...onths, I'd no longer be able to tell one yellow skinned potato variety from another. Thankfully, I knew that one was white fleshed (Green Mountain), one was yellow fleshed and waxy (Milva), and one was yellow fleshed and floury (German Butterball). So I did what anyone in this situation would do - I cooked and ate one of each. Not a terrible way to spend an afternoon, but you can be damn sure that next fall I'll be labeling them as I dig! #potatoes #spuds #storagecrops #victorygarden #foodsecurity #homegrown #growyourown #gyo #growyourfood #backyardgarden #organicgarden #veggiegarden #kitchengarden #growwhatyoueat #vegpatch #ilovegardening #foodnotlawns #gramyourgarden #greenthumb #potager #veganfarm #allotmentlove #gardenstagram #homesteading #homesteadlife #homegarden #vegetablegarden #mygardentoday #gardenlife #instagramhomesteaders

To the naked eye, it doesn't really look like there's much going on in the garden at the moment, but there's treasure beneath the muck!! Today I picked more of the beets, a few carrots, and the first of the parsnips. This year marks my first successful attempt at growing celeriac, and I can't wait to try it. We've actually never eaten it before, so please share your favorite celeriac tips! #growfoodnotlawns #victorygarden #homesteading #farmcore

I harvested my last two Filderkraut cabbages today, between rainstorms and in anticipation of the cold snap that's forecast for next week. This variety holds well in the garden, makes excellent sauerkraut, and can get a lot bigger than these two are. They should keep us in fresh greens for weeks, if not months. I got the seed from Eagleridge Seeds of Salt Spring Island, who sell some fantastic heritage varieties. Check them out if you're in Canada! #heritageseeds #cabbage #ho...mesteading #sauerkraut #farmhousekitchen #seasonaleats #slaw #gyo #growwhatyoueat #homegrown #growsomethinggreen #veggiepatch #epicgardening #growyourownfood #organicgardening #backyardgarden #urbangardening #organicgarden #growfoodnotlawns #victorygarden #myvictoryharvest #vegetablegarden #greenthumb #kitchengarden #permaculture #veggiegarden #homesteadersofinstagram #instagramhomesteaders #veganfarm See more

I love finding simple and delicious recipes to add to our regular rotation, and this curried chickpea salad satisfies on both points. It's packed with crunchy broccoli and carrots, and livened up with a touch of heat and complexity from the curry. The recipe comes from the new book Simply Delicious Vegan by Caitlin Shoemaker of @frommybowl, and the book definitely lives up to its name. We made the curried chickpeas for lunch, and there was enough to have some in wraps the fol...lowing day, and we just finished the last of it on crackers with a bowl of soup. I love recipes that I can make and draw on for days. If you signed up for Veganuary and are needing inspiration, Caitlin's book is a great place to start. I'll share more of the book and one of our other favorite recipes in my stories, as well as an opportunity for you to get a free copy of the book. For more vegan food ideas, please check out my food account, @farmhouse.vegan, where I'm going to share more recipes and tips for transitioning to a plant-based diet throughout the month of January. #veganuary #cookbooks #plantbased #growwhatyoueat #eatwhatyougrow #eatwhatyousow #oilfreevegan #eatplants #whatveganseat #veganuarytips #veganforhealth #veganfortheplanet #veganfortheanimals #friendsnotfood #choosecompassion #veganfarm #veganfamily #wfpb
