Going back to school don't panic! Kids are pretty resilient and often take their cue from us and how we react to events. One thing we learned through running our Summer Interactive Skills programs this summer is that it didn't take long for the kids, parents, and staff to get used to all the health safety procedures and routines. "Routine" is the keyword here. Most of us can adapt pretty well to situations once we learn what is expected, and what is going to happen. Kids a...re the same. What we saw once the routine and guidelines were established (which took about an hour) was a ton of smiles, laughter, connection, and learning. And problem-solving! It was great to help the children and teens think creatively about how to accomplish a task or adapt an activity to follow the safety guidelines! They taught us a lot too! So have faith. In your school staff, in your child's ability to adapt, and in yourself to stay calm, positive, and patient. It's not going to be perfect so don't expect that it will be. But if we are all patient with each other in this unprecedented challenge, we will not only get through it, but we may help our children to become stronger, more creative, and more adaptable going forward. Now that September is upon us, our Training in Core Social Skills Programs will be starting at the end of this month! These are small group weekly sessions, where children and teens are supported to develop greater confidence and competence in social interaction. We begin by helping kids understand others, and themselves and their own behaviours, in relation to others. We help them understand the behaviours that contribute to positive feelings in relationships. And we use gam...es and activities, developed and supervised by our psychologists, to practice the skills the kids learn! 3 Levels cover non-verbal skills, verbal skills and emotional regulation and social problem-solving skills. Please call or email our office for more details and to book an intake interview soon if youd like your child to participate or visit https://cutt.ly/1fRq2HH for more info! For our year-end Training in Core Social Skills party, we made the most of these physically distant times! By using hula-hoops and markers, we created a safe and fun experience for our participants to be together, apart! Each child participated in an obstacle course that involved various fun activities in each hula-hoop. Our group leaders served snacks while wearing proper safety attire and masks, and participants ate and visited while sitting in their hula-hoop to maintain a proper distance. We look forward to using creative approaches like these to ensure everyone has a fun yet safe experience in our upcoming Summer and School Year Programs!

As we enter Phase 2 of Albertas relaunch strategy, some children may be afraid to return to normal activities for fear of getting sick. Here are a few things you can do to help your child cope with their anxiety about returning to normal and increasing social activities! 1. Validate your childs feelings by saying something such as, I see that you are worried. I understand. 2. Gently ask some questions to find out exactly what your child is worried about.... 3. Help them move into problem-solving; ask What do you think would help you to feel better when we go or do _______________? 4. Try to help your child feel a greater sense of control when preparing to go out. Let them know they can signal you if they begin to feel afraid and you can take a break together and discuss. 5. Knowing exactly what they are going to experience can help children to feel a greater sense of control. Talk to them about where you are going, what the expectations will be, what they might encounter. 6. Practice going on very short outings. 7. Take 5 minutes each day to practice wearing a mask at home so they can build comfort with it. 8. Use a comfort item to help transition from the comfort of home out into the world again.

Were so excited to reopen our clinic this week and see our clients face-to-face for counselling support and assessment. Whats morewe are still providing video counselling when it is the best fit during these times. This is just a snapshot of what we are doing to keep you, us and all our families safe: - Health screening all clients and staff prior to coming into the clinic - Hand-sanitizing at the door and wearing masks in session... - Sanitizing high-touch surfaces after each client - Limiting the number of people in the clinic at one time Questions? Send us an email to [email protected] or call 780-454-4634. Looking forward to seeing you soon!
