Franklin Method for Equestrians In Derby for two days assisting Alysen Starko-bowes on the Franklin Method Equine Spine Diploma. This morning I was ...introducing the spine and the arthrokinematics of the spinal facet joints and how they differ at different sections of the spine. Bones are primarily compressive components in the body which means they are good at dealing with compressive forces. Imaging the vertebra as floating bones in a tensional network of connective tissue and allowing the spine to feel elastic and bouncy like a spring can dramatically improve riding performance. Alysen is coaching the riders with the Franklin balls and spine imagery. Its always enlightening to re-visit the theory lectures of Philippe Karl. His words come together so clearly. "WHAT DOES MEAN - DRESSAGE? - from a good diction...ary: all the physical and psychological pressures you are using to educate an animal to do something for you - as work, as a pleasure, as a sport, or for any purpose. Be it an elephant to carry logs, a dog to hunt, or a rabbit to come out of your hat... its the same, its all dressage. You can judge dressage by the result, But its not sufficient, you can also judge according to the means used to come to the result. Because it's well known that you can school an animal by cruelty, by torture, by incredible things, and it can become a game also. And if you come to a similar result by soft means, as by roughness and torture, it's not the same. The first one is more talent and knowledge than the second one. So its to be clear, from the beginning, that the result is not enough to judge. I give an example... if someone has a high result, but has side reins, martingale, tight noseband, and sweating and fighting a lot to have their horse on the bit; compared to someone who has a high result who doesn't need all that - who do you choose? I choose the second one. Its important to have this idea in the brain. So the result is not sufficient to judge the competence and the quality of it." Philippe Karl.
