Registration is now open for the solar show next week. Normally this show has been based in Edmonton but since this event is now virtual you can easily attend from Calgary. A little recreational math over the Christmas break. I downloaded the generation and emissions data on US coal and gas electric generation plants from eia.gov for 2019. Calculated average emissions of 1.0 kg of CO2 per kWh from 309* coal plants. Calculated average emissions of 0.44 kg of CO2 per kWh from 1,875* gas plants. This is why the support of solar and wind generation is important. Each kWh of solar and wind (and hydro) produced offsets the CO2 produced by each kWh ...of fuel-powered generation. *excluding generating plants with combined thermal generation or whose CO2 emissions were not reported or unclear. That excluded 28% of the coal and 35% of the gas facilities in the 2019 report.

The 2020 Eco-Solar Home Tour has been cancelled. We will take a pause this year and try and come back again next year. We looked at possibly putting together some virtual tours but they did not come together. We will start up again by calling for homes for the 2021 tour in November or December. In the mean time be safe and take care of your families. Thank you to all of our tour presenters and volunteers that helped put this year’s tour together. Well friends, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that the web site for the 2020 Eco-Solar Tour is ready and posted online. You can see information on the homes for this year’s tour at http://www.ecosolar.ca. The bad news? Right now the tour is suspended. We will let you know if anything changes between now and June. Site #7 is SAIT Green Building Technolofy LAB. There are 31 solar panels on the main building and 8 panels on the sides. Add to that energy efficient triple pane windows; double stud walls with R40 walls- R-60 roof.... The concrete floors act as a thermal mass - captures the sun’s heat in the winter and cools during the night for the summer months. This project includes a large solar carport at the entrance of the building that is a trackable sixty solar panel unit with 16,800 watts. Site #5 is Rocky Ridge CHP. The mCHP unit uses natural gas to produce up to 1.5kW of electricity and 12,600 BTU of heat transferred with glycol.... By capturing the heat from the electricity generation process, the mCHP unit claims 90% efficiency when converting the natural gas fuel to useful energy. Site#3 is Macewan NZE Retrofit house. By updating the insulation, doors and windows and then adding a solar array this home has offset all of its annual energy needs. This home demonstrates that NZE can be accomplished as a retrofit.
