Eco-Choice Pest Control 09.05.2021

Introducing our new line of chemical-free mosquito products! ECPC has partnered with Green-Strike to offer a line of new or updated products. Most of the designs are pollinator-friendly and target only mosquitoes, so harm to beneficial insects will be minimal. As a bonus, these products are Canadian-made! The Auto Preventer is our best suggestion for overall property protection. Each unit will lure mosquitoes from about 0.5 acres to lay their eggs in the unit, which then filt...ers the eggs so they dry out and can't hatch. There is a monthly refill kit to replace the filter and lure, and studies have shown mosquito reductions up to 70% in 3 weeks! If you don't want to mess around with a refill kit, get in touch with us. We are offering maintenance services within our service range so all you have to worry about is bringing the unit inside in September to store it for the winter. For a full catalogue with pricing, check out https://ecochoicepestcontrol.ca/greenstrike-catalogue and make sure you click 'show more' at the bottom to see the full line up. These products are not yet available in our store but if you'd like to pre-order we can make sure we have yours in stock for May! Drop us a line [email protected] We also have chemical-free options safe for you, your kids or your pets to protect from black flies and horse/deer flies! The Deep North Spray (made right here in Haliburton!) is a fan favourite and protects well from black flies and mosquitoes. Another fan favourite is the Dragonfly Wingman, yet another CANADIAN made product that offers personal protection to keep horse and deer flies away!

It’s treasure hunt time! If gypsy moth affected your trees this summer, you can help reduce next year’s defoliation by finding and removing as many egg masses a...s possible in fall and winter. Gypsy moth egg masses are yellowish brown, flattish, covered in fuzzy hair, and about the size of a quarter or loonie. You may find as individual egg masses or clusters of them (as pictured). Scour your trees, fence posts, outdoor furniture, buildings, and other nooks and crannies on your property for egg masses, scrape them off, and dispose of them. Don’t worry about egg masses you can’t reach egg masses above the snowline may be destroyed by prolonged very cold temperatures. Great introduction to our stripey’s! Umbrella (paper) wasps are back. Attic treatments and traps are somewhat effective this time of year so give us a call if they’re all over your soffits again like they were in the spring.

In the last 2 days we’ve heard reports of 5 bats inside homes. One was in our living room as we relaxed at the end of the day! It got in this hole in our screen because we are horrible hypocrites and don’t close up holes even though that’s what we spend all day suggesting to others. What to do if you find a bat in the living space: 1. Stay calm. 2. Put on leather gloves but don’t grab or touch the bat.... 3. Get a fishing net or a box to put over the bat, if safe. 4. If you can safely get the bat in the box or net, put it outside and make sure there is an opening for the bat to squeeze out. 5. Resume peaceful activities. If you do not feel like you can safely remove the bat please call a professional. If you wake up with a bat in your bedroom you should call your doctor or public health unit. The odds of contracting rabies are very slim but rabies is serious enough that you don’t want to play those odds. Remember that bats are our friends! They eat mosquitoes and their populations are declining. This is meant to inform, not incite fear.

Wasps are EVERYWHERE right now! We keep hearing that everyone is sold out of spray, but we’re not. We have lots!! DIY wasp eradication should be done very carefully but if you’re up for it, come on by! We can do curbside if you are not comfortable wearing a mask or entering stores. We’re at 199 Highland St in downtown Haliburton and our hours are currently Mon-Fri 9-5.

Have you noticed a large dark spot on a tree trunk lately? Look closer, you may see hundreds of these stripey dears. Their sheer numbers and resemblance to wasps can make them appear alarming but these bark lice are harmless! They eat lichen and some fungi and dead bark so they’re usually considered beneficial. We all need one less thing to worry about in 2020 so here it is Thanks to Brandon, one of our awesome customers, for the great photo and permission to use it.

Got wasps? You’re not alone! Umbrella wasps are EVERYWHERE right now. They nest in attics or walls and tend to hang out around the soffits and eaves on sunny days. This large, gangly species is not aggressive and doesn’t tend to sting but they are out in large numbers right now which can be concerning. They are difficult to treat but we’re trying out some new tactics and will hope to have an easy, cost effective solution soon!

As restrictions ease everyone is going to deal with our new reality differently, and that’s ok. All we can do, individually, is make the best decision for ourselves and act in a way that promotes everyone’s health while keeping a roof over our heads and food in our bellies. For the time being, our retail store is going to remain open for curbside pickup only. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we remain closed for browsing. We understand the necessity for some l...ocations to open back up but we believe ours is a location that does not yet require this and are doing our part to keep cases to a minimum. We would be happy to chat with you about the best products for your situation and while our physical operations have changed, our commitment to helping this community remains strong. Please call or email any time 705-457-1500 or info @ ecochoicepestcontrol.ca. Stay safe and stay well. Keep your peace and keep in mind that we don’t know the struggles of others. They deserve not to be judged for their surficial behaviour. We love you Haliburton
