The previous post will provide those who wish to create a Rainwater Harvesting water collection, conservation and diversion system to either reduce their water costs due to water meters or to reduce the pressure and stress of private water sources i.e. drilled well or small lakes and reservoirs. Keep in mind by using recycled containers and other materials a low cost system can be developed to recover the thousands of liters of Rainwater through the eavestroughs on houses, ...garages and barns lost each year. Over the past 4.5 years the Eco-Container Co. has assisted many residents and businesses throughout the Maritimes by providing Food-Grade and Non-Food Grade plastic barrels and instruction through workshops and demonstrations. To get an idea of what we can provide to assist you with your project in our goal of using as much recycled materials as possible to Harvest as much rainwater as possible. Checkout the photo section of this page to get an indication of what we can do or have already done. The Eco-Container Co. can be contacted by email at: [email protected].

Considerations prior to establishing Rainwater Harvesting System. Rainwater is an excellent source of drinking water whether you’re living on a homestead or surviving after a disaster. However, it’s not as simple as setting out buckets when it rains. You need to set up a proper rainwater harvesting system. And even then, you must be careful not to make any serious mistakes. Look over this list of mistakes to make sure you’re not making them or you’ll live to regret it. Here... they are: 1. Forgetting to make sure it’s legal in your area. 2. Using the wrong kind of barrel (the wrong kind will leach dangerous chemicals into your water). 3. Buying expensive barrels. If you’re search hard enough, you can find them used. 4. Not setting up a system for getting your water out (such as a spigot or pump). 5. Not keeping your barrels covered (with sheets, screens, or even cooking oil). 6. Forgetting to let rain rinse your roof for 10 minutes and have simple filter on the down spout of the evestrough before collecting rainwater. 7. Using a small system. It takes a lot of water to live. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is when you are purchasing previously used plastic and steel barrels for the use of harvesting rainwater or collecting and storing water is taking the word of the seller. Take note of the following when buying used barrels/containers: 1. In Canada all plastic barrels/containers are graded with the grade impression literally pressed into the plastic somewhere on the barrel or container. The Health Canada indicator of the grade of a plastic Food Grade container i.e. barrel, buckets, small pots is: The Health Canada Food Grade indicator label is the # 2 inside a Triangle see attached photo along a an information sheet.. If this label cannot be found on the container consider it as not Food Grade. 2. Remember the barrels maybe marked as Food Grade but it is very important to determine to your satisfaction the last product in the barrel/container was also a Food Product or a safe product. It is better to buy an unwashed barrel/container, so you can literally determine the last product that was continued in the barrel/container. Then you cleanse, sanitize or sterilize the item to your satisfaction and safety. There are people who have been mislead by those reselling plastic products and either loss money or could not use the container because of possible contamination from a Non-Food product or another type unsafe product. Keep in mind there are safe Non-Food products shipped in Food Grade containers i.e. soap, cleansers. That is why it is so important to determine the contents prior to purchase because after the purchase it may only be good as a garbage can. If the seller CANNOT OR WILL satisfy you as to what was in the container find another seller. For in-depth information plastic review attached information sheet from Health Canada web site.

For those who will be storing wood for the winter, there are now stack-able long lasting plastic pallets available. By using these vented plastic pallets you can avoid having to replace those old wooden pallets every couple of years and disposing them somewhere including all those nails they are constructed with. Six pallets when stacked only take up about 12" of vertical space, depending on model, are washable and can speed up the drying of wood process.
