In fall, the chlorophyll pigment responsible for the green colour of the leaves is absorbed by the plant, which uses it as a reserve. Consequently, other pigments arise such as carotene (orange), anthocyanin (red) or xanthophyll (yellow). When this happens, the tree realizes winter is coming by throwing all the leaves, which fall like blankets on the garden floor.
