John Keats’ gravestone is incredibly unique. For one, you may notice that Keats’ name isn’t carved in the stone. According to The Paris Review, this was by desi...gn. the words that he asked his friends to have carved into his gravestoneonly these words, not his nameconjure an enigma: ‘Here lies One Whose Name was writ in Water.’ These words leave fans of Keats’ work questioning their meaning to this day. The Paris Review ponders if Keats’ epitaph is an angry protest against the unfairness of a fate that appeared to have deprived him of a chance of immortality, or an almost zen-like statement of resignation and of the impermanence of all existence. Afterall, Keats did die of tuberculosis at the young age of 25. Find out more about Keats’ life and his near obsession with death via this link: https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2016//23/writ-in-water/ Image one is by GIOVANNI DALL’ORTO.
