Foam is the only choice that can address complex assemblies which need to be wrapped and sealed!

When you retrofit an existing home that was built using only 2x4 framing there is no better product than 2lb close-cell spray foam. In just three inches of foam you achieve a 94% thermal separation within the stud cavity. The best that R-14 of fibreglass can reach is about 12-14%!

One of the largest impact that 2lb closed-cell spray foam can have on Canadian homes is sealing the foundation rim joists that can attribute anywhere from 5-9% to your heating bill. The second impact is to thermal seal the cold concrete foundation walls that causes "stack pressure or is often referred to as stack effect". Stack effect can move large volumes of air through a building envelope. In the winter, the warm air in a heated building is lighter (less dense) than the ...cold air that leaks in from outside; that warm bubble of air wants to rise up and out. The flow of air leaving the top of the building draws cold air into cracks at the bottom. This process is magnified by having a cold basement. Simply put, if you have every stood over a top lid freezer with the door open. You will feel the cold air rise and quickly hit your face. It's that rising air that pushes and displaces the warm air further upwards and eventually out of your home. Just consider that your bare concrete walls are like the sides of a freezer and now you see how big the problem can get! The end results of stack effect/pressure is the that you experience quite a difference in temperature between floors. Secondly, it's you furnace that must work harder to compensate to overcome the stronger drive to move air upwards and out of the building. Spray foaming your entire basement will significant reduced this problem. We even had a client reduce her gas bill by $80.00 a month off of Tache Street and Centra Gas came out to see it the gas meter had been tampered with! See more
