Alexandra (Alex) Borowiecka, NWTALA, CSLA (May 8, 1951-March 1, 2021) Ecology North would like to recognize with sadness the passing of Alex Borowiecka. She was a thoughtful and gentle person that quietly made her mark in her adopted community of Yellowknife, NWT. From her professional life as an architect who was part of the team of landscape architects that developed many of the parks, trails and facilities throughout the north, to her volunteer work with Ecology North, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society NWT Chapter and the NWT Association of Landscape Architects, Alex made a meaningful impact. She will be missed. Alex was a long time supporter of the environmental movement.

Ecology North hosted three successful events during Water Week 2021. Thank you, Daniel T'Seleie, for engaging us in conversation about Indigenous water rights, environmental law, water stewardship and impacts from upstream development during a Zoom discussion on March 16th. On March 17th, 11 people gathered at Northern United Place to watch a short documentary film, Cold Amazon. If you missed this event, watch the 22-minute film for free on Vimeo: http://ow.ly/7hXF50EdG7l. ... On World Water Day, March 22nd, Ecology North celebrated with a screening of Nahanni River of Forgiveness at Capitol Theatre. Learn more about this film here: http://ow.ly/SVGz50EdG7m Thank you to our funders, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (Government of Northwest Territories) and the City of Yellowknife for making water week possible!

The World Snow Day 2021 Fat Bike Group Ride was a huge success! We had 20 people come out on January 17th to try this excellent winter activity & active transportation method, most of whom were trying it out for the first time! The weather was ideal for biking across the lake (no wind!) and the snow made it a perfect #worldsnowday. We were out for over 2 hours and had a great time. Thanks to Yellowknife Mountain Bike Club, City of Yellowknife, NWT Recreation and Parks Association - NWTRPA, Overlander Sports, and Borealis Bike Tours Unlimited for making this event possible.

Ecology North has a new Executive Director! Dawn Tremblay has dropped the "interim" and is now officially the Executive Director of Ecology North. Dawn has been part of the Ecology North team since 2010 and her hard work continues to show. She encourages a supportive, team working environment and is not only a great addition to the Ecology North team but an amazing leader. Congratulations Dawn and thank you for creating such an amazing atmosphere at Ecology North!

We had a great turnout of Birdwatchers this year at the 2020-2021 Yellowknife Christmas Bird Count! Counters spotted high numbers of finches this winter, above average numbers of mid-winter Pine Grosbeaks, and Waxwings. House Sparrows were not surveyed sufficiently in the downtown area, so recorded numbers are artificially low. Willow Ptarmigan numbers and Canada Jay (recent name change from Gray Jay) both had low counts. Common Ravens had an all-time high turnout. A Red-brea...sted Nuthatch has been discovered in town this winter, relying on a feeder down in Old Town. It was spotted on count day, becoming the first ever sighting of this species for the count! There has also been an out-of-season White-throated Sparrow surviving at feeders down in the Willow Flats neighbourhood, and it was spotted during the count day. A special thank-you goes out to Reid for being the main coordinator and compiler for the Bird Count. Thank you also to all of the birders who braved the elements to count with us, this was one of the coldest years for the count yet!
