Why aren’t we talking about the burgeoning tech sector, medical / health advances, agribusiness and the vast array of thriving companies?!

I’m learning a whole new respect for start-up companies! Granted, I’ve helped any number with business plans and other such crucial foundation documents, but the sheer amount of work that goes into research and logistics? I’d forgotten! Financial projections alone took the better part of a solid week! Lucky for me, a fabulous business partner wrote up the business plan. Next up: the pitch deck.

Diversity can mean different things to different people. How have people survived the economic downturn in this province, and how have some actually prospered? We’re seeing expanding markets and new industries, and these provide opportunities for investors as well as job seekers. Micro-breweries, for example, are becoming a sustainable industry and - expanding on that - we’re now seeing the micro-distillery business gaining strength. The farm-to-table industry is bringing... life back to agribusiness. We are seeing such exciting new ideas as individuals using their creativity to build a clothing business from a passion for photography. We are also seeing large corporations diversifying their positions by opening offices outside of Alberta, and this helps to ensure company longevity with cash flow from other sources as well as additional employment. Yet other companies are utilizing the vast knowledge base available in the mature worker segment of our population. Diversity means thinking differently, and that is what Economic Diversity Magazine will be showcasing.
