Potash demand is inelastic, the world only needs to much, its like salt, twice as much is not twice the flavour. So the problem has always been this tendency to oversupply the market. The new tax payer funded mines are ready to roll, and now the workers and the province get the boot. Its a good time for nutrien and the other companies that dominate the market space. Less workers, more profits, taxpayer pays. #economicsmattertoo
Who should own and control the potash industry, and who should benefit from the exploitation of this non-renewable natural resource? Not even the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) was willing to make this question part of the discussion. All of this was not surprising. The Saskatchewan Party government, headed by Brad Wall, was a strong supporter of the rights of big business and foreign investors. The leader of the NDP, Dwain Lingenfelter, had been Deputy Leader and a ke...y member of the inner cabinet of Roy Romanow’s NDP government in 1994 when they completed the privatization of PCS and opened it up to majority U.S. ownership. Lorne Calvert’s NDP government then greatly reduced the royalties and taxes on the potash industry in 2003 and 2005. The NDP leadership continually demonstrated its reluctance to broaden the debate.
