Barbeque scrapings can produce environmental benefits? That's what the University of Alberta is looking into! Through a process of using high heat, called thermal conversion, they're seeing if it can potentially capture contaminants from wastewater, remove carbon dioxide from the air or stabilize contaminants in soil. #biomass #ecosystemservices #universityofalberta #reuse
Biodiversity offsetting is the process of intentionally producing environmental gains to counterweigh the negative impacts of development on nature. Join Alberta Land Institute for an 8-part webinar that will cover trends, best practices and ultimately generate an insightful discussion! This year's theme for #WorldWaterDay is 'Water for All'. The ecosystem services derived from water come in many forms from providing aquatic species habitat to being essential to human life. Everyone should have access to safe, clean drinking water. Check out Canadian Geographic's 8 facts about water in #Canada> https://www.canadiangeographic.ca//eight-facts-about-water
"Our daily lives rely on nature and the ecosystems around us. Drinking water, crop pollination, fresh air, flood prevention, and human mental and physical well-being are all benefits that people get from nature." "House Wrens can be seen nesting inside tree holes and nest boxes. As the season progresses their nests can become infested with mites and other parasites that feed on the wren nestlings. Perhaps to fight this problem, wrens often add spider egg sacs into the materials they build their nests from. In lab studies, once the spiders hatched, they helped the wrens by devouring the nest parasites." Information Credit > https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/House_Wren/overview
Were kicking off Pollinator Week with a crash-course on pollination! More than ducks, our habitat conservation efforts help pollinator species toothanks to support from people like you.
Pollinators provide a crucial ecosystem service by improving or stabilizing yields of approximately 75% of cropplant species globally (1). There are over 300 native bee species in Alberta. With growing pressures of land alterations and expanding agriculture its important we support pollinator habitat. Join the Alberta Native Bee Council for a webinar on how to create a habitat for Albertas native bees. (1) - https://esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com//10.1890/120126
