This is probably the last seal of 2020. We are happy to work with Mayfield Renovations in building their client's high performing home. The HVAC system was designed with 1 ach50 of envelope leakage. We are here today to make sure the house is sealed per their design. Temporary doors are still in place, so more tapping involved. Overall we started around 2 ach50, we are aiming for around 0.3 if sealant quantities and time permit. 51 mins into the seal and already down to 1.3 ach50. Per my last post, we did another Aerobarrier installation in Saskatoon this past weekend. This time, is was a 1300 sq ft Garage suite built with the Greenstone ICE panels. The site was fully drywalled. The initial air leakage rate of this unit was 5.6 ACH50 with an equivalent leakage area of 190 sq in. This was surprising to us. Within the first 30 mins, we realized that the Greenstone ICE panels didn’t seem to leak much. The main leakage area was the perimeter of the steel d...eck (floor above garage) that had a challenging detail. It took about 35 mins to be in a cloud of sealant in the garage! Thankfully, we had large overhead doors that could be open and air scrubbers. This really shows that a building is a system, and it is only as good as its weakest link. Air will find its way out, one way or another. Another great time in Regina! This week we had the honor to install Aerobarrier for 3 row-house units for Habitat For Humanity! 2 middle units and 1 end unit. The results were very interesting as, the first middle unit had the highest air leakage rate pre-seal, then the second middle unit, and the end unit had the lowest starting air leakage rate. It seems that the units got better as we sealed their adjacent units. It was great weather and a very cool setup. As the sun went down, so did the ACH50 of all those units! It may be news to some of you that air tightness is not "just" a great way to save energy, but also brings many benefits if utilized properly. Warranty providers claim that air leakage is the second largest trigger to envelope failure, after bulk water. Air leakage is also the cause to many discomforts in homes (thermal, smells and sometimes acoustical). Hence having a very air tight house, with proper venti...lation to dry the house out from the inside, will give you, not only an energy efficiency house, but also a more comfortable, healthy and durable one at a very low cost increase. First AeroBarrier seal in Saskatchewan Follow-up. It was a great day yesterday in Regina! Sunny and mild temperatures. The builder was very happy to have us on site. Site was at boarding-drywall up without mud and tape. The building team did a good job of sealing the house to 1.42 ACH50 pre-seal and had an initial ELA (equivalent leakage area) of 61 sq.in. After 1h of seal time, the ACH50 was down to 0.5. We had time so we offered the builder to let it go and see how low it w...ould get. After 126 mins of seal time, under positive pressure, the final air leakage rate was 0.08 ACH50 with an ELA of 3 sq inches! (this is not a typo). All this in 6h on site. We explained what this meant to the building team and how to address ventilation and radon protection correctly as the house is now extremely air tight. Another great Aerobarrier Story! No matter what type of unit, is always works! We had the opportunity to seal a finished and occupied single condo unit within a condo building over the weekend. We worked with ServPro Calgary to help in prepping the space to ensure all personal belongings and furniture would be protected against sealant deposits. Prepping day 1, seal day 2 and take down and review day 3.
