DYKE is the story (so far) of Elaina Martin's incredible life filled with queer liberation and resilience. It follows her from growing up in rural Ontario to fi...nding love and pursuing her passions in the height of the gay scene in Ottawa in the 1990s. I devoured this wild ride in less than a day, because this healing novel was exactly what I needed to read in 2020. As you could guess if you are queer or have had queer friends tell you their stories of hurt, DYKE is also an often heartwrenching and brutally honest look into how homophobia, misogyny, and silence on both in Canada makes life confusing, lonely, and contributes to difficulties for 2SLGBTQIA+ people in forming community. She shows us through her perseverance and no holds barred honesty, not only how trauma can affect our relationships and addictions, but also how to overcome them and continue finding joy and beauty in a world that tries to break her at every corner. If you are struggling with something you think no one else has been through, or even just struggling to listen to your heart/intuition, I strongly recommend this book. I want to make it clear though; this book isn't just for her fellow dykes, nor is it just for members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Everyone in Canada has something they could learn from Elaina's raw storytelling. I truly believe that the more people read her memoir, the more people will realize their experiences are not the exception, they are the norm. By showing us not only where she suceeded but by also being honest about her faults and failures, Elaina teaches us that the only way to change toxic culture is to face it head on; passionately forging through empowered by courage and kindness, and supported by the love of family, whether they be that by blood or choice. Six months after the 16th and final Westfest, Ottawa’s free community music and arts festival, founder and producer Elaina Martin wrote her first book, and exac...tly one year later she is publishing it. Elaina will be launching her self-published memoir, DYKE with a virtual ZOOM gathering, Friday, June 12th, 2020. A live event for up to 100 friends and supporters that will include performances by her many artist pals. Elaina will do a reading from her new book and of course, let people know where they can purchase their very own copy. DYKE a memoir book description Event producer, music director and community organizer Elaina Martin has, over the past three decades, become widely known in Eastern Ontario, bolstering queer representation, community sustainability and the arts. In this soulful narrative, she shares how she grew into these roles, and what she learned along the way. Her descriptions of the eras, personalities, and local cultures she has known so intimately convey not only the life of one butch, queer musician and writer, but explore the meanings of tragedy, resilience, queer life, contention, forgiveness, and family. From being abused and eventually outed in her northern Ontario town, to singing and partying her way through the best and worst of Ottawa’s gay venues at the height of 1990s decadence, to ultimately finding harmony and love, her story will break your heart and ignite your spirit. Author Elaina Martin Bio Elaina Martin is a Canadian, butch Dyke singer, songwriter, and author. She recorded the EP Cancer Woman in 2000. She is also an award-winning live event producer and director. She writes both fiction and non-fiction. Dyke, A Memoir is her second published literary work. In 2001, her short story The Homecoming appeared in Hot & Bothered 3: Short Short Fiction on Lesbian Desire (Arsenal Pulp Press). Martin lives a proud queer life with her partner, Cara Tierney, alongside their four cats and two dogs. She wrote this book in the winter of 2020, while in their cottage home on unceded Algonquin territory.
