X is for Xerox. Or at least the spirit of Xerox: Duplicating machines. Teachers in our early schools sometimes took advantage of ‘modern’ technology, like this Lion brand Menucator machine we have. The first mechanical Mimeograph machines were used in our offices starting in the 1960s #ArchivesAtoZ #ecsd

V is for Vocational Education. In 1961, our Board of Trustees approved a new wing for St Joseph High. When it opened in 1964, Electronics, Foods, Automotives and Carpentry were taught by experienced tradespersons and supported by local companies #ArchivesAtoZ #ecsdfaithinspires

U is for Unprocessed Materials. Processing new acquisitions takes time, and patience. This often means working with a backlog of new arrivals, and working on their accession as time and resources permit #ArchivesAtoZ #ecsdfaithinspires

Hello, and happy #nationalarchivesweek ! Did you know that archivists often visit *other* archives than their own? Today I find myself at the Alberta Provincial Archives doing some research for a special project on our schools. It’s nice to get a fresh perspective and make great use of the wonderful resources the PAA has. I’m inspired today by the quote that crowns the reading room: OF ALL NATIONAL ASSETS, ARCHIVES ARE THE MOST PRECIOUS; THEY ARE THE GIFT OF ONE GENERATION TO ANOTHER - Sir Arthur G. Dougherty, Dominion Archivist of Canada (1924)

A little ‘before-and-after’ today! We have been working on restoring a portrait of Katherine Therrien for her school’s upcoming namesake celebration. The original portrait has hung in the school since its opening in 1975, and was quite faded and sun damaged. The lovely lady had a bit of a digital refresh, and is on her way back to the school to be honoured once more. Kay Therrien began teaching for Edmonton Separate schools in 1944, and was appointed Supervisor of Elementary Education in 1955. She went on to become an Assistant Superintendent for the Edmonton Catholic School District, and remained in that position until her retirement in 1972. #ecsdawesome #ecsdfaithinspires #history #yeg #beforeandafter #portrait @ The Edmonton Catholic School District Archives
