Over 45? In Career Transition? Age-ism is a reality - your 'fight back' strategy: 1. Work at looking fit and being fit.... 2. Embrace life-long-learning. Be cutting edge. 3. Sell your value - don't be modest! 4. Be a team player - open to change and other's ideas. 5. Help others freely - so your value on an individual level. 6. Over-deliver - focus on high productivity. 7. Consider creating your own independent business. What have I left out?

Why Mountains? Questioned about why he wanted to climb Mount Everest, climber George Mallory famously replied, Because it’s there. Edmund Hillory, one of the two to first climb Mount Everest added, It’s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves. That’s why ‘mountains’ are so much a part of this Own Your Career site mountains are a rich metaphor for our careers. Perhaps even more than summitting a mountain, in career we conquer ourselves and realize our greatest achievements. (Okay, I’ll come clean - I happen to love being in the mountains! I'm on steroids with this mountain metaphor! So, it’s a pleasure to share my pics and stories - I see life and career lessons in every step! I hope you join in the fun of it, too.)

Checked the weather - it's winter in Assiniboine! Hauled out the winter gear - I'll have to pack this stuff. Thermal underwear, toque and sheep-skin gloves in August! The career connection? Look ahead and be prepared! On a hike, there's obvious risk if you don't anticipate problems. In our careers, maybe not so obvious but, of course, still there. It's be said over and over again - there's no security anymore. So, always be ready.

Managing Career Detours with Agility BEAR DETOUR! A mother grizzly and cub shut down yesterday's planned hike to Sarrail Ridge! So, we had to call on our agility skills and knowledge from prior exploration in the area to find an even better alternative - Upper Kananaskis River Falls. Just the right length, better level of difficulty for the experience of our party, and (bonus!) found the trailhead for Aster Lake backcountry campgroud - leads into continental-divide ranges whe...re some of the best photo ops in the Rockies are to be found! For another day ... Made me think off the sometimes abrupt detours our careers can make that can feel unwelcome at the time but infact lead to amazing and much better opportunities - happened to me more than once. If you find yourself somewhere you didn't expect to be in your career - don't be sad! You are probably on the cusp of something better than you could had planned.
