You go catch your horse and there he stands, in a lot of pain, with one leg swollen from the stifle down to twice its normal size (the infamous "stovepipe" leg).... Sounds familiar? What is unscientifically called a fat leg is usually an inflammation: of subcutaneous connective tissue (in that case it's called cellulitis); of the lymphatic system (called lymphangitis, a severe form of cellulitis); or of blood vessels (called vasculitis). Please note: lymphangitis/cellulitis is a dramatically different condition than your everyday "stocking up" (fluid swelling), which normally resolves with exercise. A "fat leg" with no obvious trauma can be very frustrating for both horse owner and veterinarian due to its confusing nature. It can sideline a horse for days, weeks, or even months; and severe or untreated cases can become chronic, which can in turn result in fibrosis and hardened spots on the legs. While causes may vary, once a horse has cellulitis, it’s easy to spot. If you think your equine friend has cellulitis or even if you're not sure, we encourage you to seek professional help promptly. Your horse doctor will make the best treatment recommendations, both to reduce swelling and to address any sort of bacterial infection that might be active or that could occur due to the edema in the soft tissue. This is a great visual as to why we use more water vs oil for impaction colics. Oil used to be a major component in the treatment of impactions but we have learned to recognize the importance of using more water and electrolytes. This is frequently asked question/observation by many clients.

Managing chronic foot pain in horses has come a long way in the last ten years. Radiographs (X-rays) have long been able to show bone-related injuries. Ultrasou...nd, which can be useful for diagnosing soft-tissue injuries in the leg and elsewhere, can’t always penetrate deep enough into the foot to offer a conclusive diagnosis. That’s why MRI has been such a diagnostic asset. Thanks to MRI, we have discovered that equine foot pain has myriad causes; one such problem can be adhesions in the navicular bone or navicular bursa (the sac cushioning the bone from the deep digital flexor tendon, or DDFT). In this photo, Dr. Joanna Virgin is performing a navicular bursoscopy. This is a minimally invasive surgery used to treat and remove painful scar tissue within the bursa as well as tears of the deep digital flexor tendon in the foot. Studies have shown a significant improvement in the return to full athleticism with surgical management versus medical management alone.

10 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT EQUINE NUTRITION, courtesy of UC Davis Center for Equine Health. It is in every equestrian’s best interest to have a basic unde...rstanding of equine nutrition and be able to identify sources of essential vitamins and minerals in a horse’s diet. Dietary deficiencies and excesses can both cause health issues and affect performance. This becomes even more important for the care and management of horses with disorders such as equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) and polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM). Be sure to work with your veterinarian and/or equine nutritionist to formulate diets appropriate for your horses’ needs to keep them feeling and performing their best! Produced by UC Davis's CEH, you can read "The Nutrition Issue" in its entirety at: https://ceh.vetmed.ucdavis.edu//Horse_Report_Spring_2020_w
