We have built the habit of washing our hands regularly, but are you doing a thorough cleaning of high touch surfaces in your home? The COVID-19 virus is most likely to be on surfaces you frequently touch with your hands. Evidence suggests the virus can live on objects and surfaces from a few hours to days, depending on the type of surface. Phones, fridge handles, door knobs, light switches, faucets, and remote controls should be cleaned more often than usual. ... Cleaners do not necessarily kill all germs, but the cleaning can remove germs and lower their numbers. This can play a role in reducing the risk of spreading infection. It can feel impossible to get everything done, let alone take care of yourself especially if you’re already struggling with a mental health concern like depression or anxiety. By creating routines, we organize our days in such a way that taking care of tasks and ourselves becomes a pattern that makes it easier to get things done without having to think hard about them. Tips for success:... Create the routine that is right for you. We don’t all have the same schedules or responsibilities and some of us struggle with certain parts of daily life more than others. Start small. Changing up your day-to-day routine all at once probably won’t end up with lasting results. Pick one small thing each week to work on. Small changes add up. Add to your existing habits. You probably already have some habits worked into your routine. Try adding new habits to existing ones. Make swaps. Think about the things you do during the day that aren’t so healthy and swap them with better behaviors. Plan ahead. When life gets hectic, you may be tempted to skip out on the new parts of your daily routine. By doing things like prepping meals, picking out an outfit the night before work, or having an alternate home workout option for the days you can’t make it to the gym, you help set yourself up for success even when you’re hurried. Make time for things you enjoy. Even if it’s just 15 minutes a day, set aside time to do something you find fun or relaxingit will release chemical messengers in your body that are good for your physical and mental health. Reward yourself for small victories. Set goals and celebrate when you reach them. Don’t beat yourself up if you miss a day. Making life changes can be hard and you might forget to do something that is new to your routine every once in a while. You don’t have to be perfect, just try to do better the next day. With #YQR area schools going back to online learning this week, many parents are struggling to find childcare and the time to juggle the extra responsibility... Remember: Focus on Basic Needs... If you're feeling overwhelmed, start with the basic needs of yourself and your child: get good sleep, eat healthy foods and do some physical activity. When those basic needs are taken care of, you can set additional goals. Begin with what has to get done. Then, consider adding what you'd like to get done. Take Small Breaks To be able to help your child, it's important that you also take care of yourself. Small breaks throughout the day, even if it's just to stretch, take some deep breaths or drink water, can help you manage stress and feel more in control. Stay Connected When trying to balance work and parenting, it can be hard to make time to connect with friends and family. Consider scheduling regular check-ins with your support system. These conversations can help structure your days and give you something to look forward to. Even a 5-minute chat can help you feel connected. Accept Uncertainty If you're experiencing a lot of uncertainty, you may be feeling uncomfortable or exhausted. Try practicing acceptance and make decisions based on the information you have now. When planning for the future, avoid focusing on worst-case scenarios. Taking a rational approach can be a big help when you're feeling powerless against uncertainty. Practice Empathy This current situation is difficult for everyone, your child included. It's normal for kids to be anxious, which may make them act out. If your child's emotions or behavior get out of hand, take a few deep breaths. Have a calm discussion about the issue with your child. You can acknowledge what your child is feeling and be honest about your own feelings, too. When things are going well, be generous with praise and reinforce positive behavior. Remind yourself that you're a good parent doing the best you can. Every success is worth celebrating, no matter how small. Remember that self-compassion is a skill you can develop through practice.
